Maybeboard

This is a deck I've been workshopping lately. This deck is not a fast win due to low power creatures, but people are more likely to concede before getting to 0 life. The main tactic of this deck is to be aggressive as possible to stop other players from building their board presence and potential mana pool.

The main pieces in the deck revolve around Liquimetal Coating and Liquimetal Torque and their ability to turn creatures and land into artifacts. One of the overlooked functions of Liquimetal Torque is its use as a mana rock for ramping. To add to these to key components, are some cards that can be used to find them, Ancient Stirrings and Light Up the Stage. Light up the Stage is great for multiple uses in this deck and can be a live saver to keep from slowing down and being able to activate the spectacle cost can put you a turn or two ahead.

I'm still trying to find the best combination of creature and artifact removal. Starting out with 4x Shenanigans seemed like a good idea, but during play testing it tends to turn into a stall of removal by dredging every turn. In this case I have decided to cut a few of them in order to add 2x Smash to Smithereens and 2x Destructive Revelry in order to activate the lower cost of Light Up the Stage, while focusing on the faster Ancient Grudge.

In terms of creature it becomes a balance of utility and power. With the addition of something like Den of the Bugbear it gives a good outlet for creatures during longer games. Something like Raging Ravine had been considered, but with a deck where 90% of the spells are 2 cmc or lower, missing out on a turn of mana is too hamstringing for an aggressive deck like this. Another great spell that seems to be overlooked is Embereth Shieldbreaker, it gives a 1 cmc artifact destruction spell on top of putting a creature into exile in order to protect it from decks that are discard heavy.

Ideal starting hands

  1. 2x Lands, 1x Liquimetal Coating, Smash to Smithereens, Light Up the Stage
  2. 2x Lands, 1x Liquimetal Coating, Any Artifact Destruction Spell
  3. 2x Lands, 1x Liquimetal Torque, Any Artifact Destruction Spell
  4. 2x Lands, 1x Ancient Stirrings

If you aren't able to at least get one of the above, mulligan your hand. You need to be aggressive and waiting for a Liquimetal card is a losing race.
