Licia, The Underrated Tribune

Commander / EDH

xSassySasquatch

Here is my Licia, Sanguine Tribune deck. I saw Licia in a trade binder and after confusing her with Mathas Fiend Seeker I took the 10 seconds required to read her card text. I quickly began thinking she might be a tad bit underrated. Now that i've been tuning the deck the last couple months, I know for a fact she is underrated.

Lets start with some of the important bits of the deck. You want to get Licia out as fast as possible. I get her out on turn 3 fairly consistently. To do so, you need Serra Ascendant swinging in or Tavern Swindler to flip a coin in your favor. It is possible to get her on turn 3 if you have played early game mana rocks and you cast Chaplain's Blessing, as it is basically just a ritual effect for Licia.

Some other things I learned while using this deck-

  1. Turn one Serra Ascendant, turn 2 Lightning Greaves, turn 3 Licia and swing. That was the optimal turn sequence I had imagined in my head. There is a lot wrong with this. Lightning Greaves on Licia wont let you use her ability. Sure, you can remove them and reequip them, but with most removal being instant sped this isn't ideal. Also, the haste doesn't matter either because you'd have to swing in with Serra Ascendant and use your combat step before casting Licia early. For these reasons, Lightning Greaves was cut from the original decklist.

  2. A bunch of cheap lifelink creatures to cast early game sounds like it would work. It doesn't, and it makes the deck bad. The creatures are always garbage, you empty your hand playing them all to try and get Licia, and a board wipe will ruin your entire game. That being said, I still run Lone Rider just because I like the card and it is easy to flip. And boy let me tell ya, when Lone Rider flips it goes from bad to pretty darn mediocre.

  3. Exquisite Blood/Sanguine Bond is boring. Exquisite Blood will be cut when I find a card I like to replace it. Sanguine Bond is very very good without Exquisite Blood so it will stay.

  4. You don't need fancy rocks like Mana Crypt or Mana Vault. But do replace them with other mana rocks if you build this deck. Sometimes even with the lifegain we still need some ramp to get Licia down.

  5. Bruse Tarl and Tymna are powerhouses that fit well in the deck. I haven't much liked the partner cards in the past, but they are all stars of this deck. Bruse Tarl will help you get Licia out and makes her deadly if she is already out. Tymna draws cards, need I say more?

  6. Abzan Falconer will give Licia flying. This will kill your enemies.

Cards I want to test soon-

  1. Chance For Glory
  2. Dawn of Hope
  3. Resplendent Angel
  4. Brion Stoutarm
