The Strategy

This is a straight forward deck; I feel like I don't need to explain the interactions between each card. The goal is to give your opponents a target rich environment with stax pieces so they ignore Zurgo, or the stax pieces prevent your opponents from responding to Zurgo. Playing your cards in the correct order is crucial; if done incorrectly, you may end up screwing yourself.

This deck is for you if:

  • You enjoy glass cannon builds
  • You like watching your opponents panic
  • You like to pre-plan your turns
  • Your games last 5-7 turns

This deck is not for you if:

  • You don't want to be archenemy
  • You don't like glass cannon builds
  • You feel like a jerk for playing stax
  • You don't want to pre-plan 2 or 3 turns ahead
  • You want to win before turn 4 in a multiplayer setting
  • You enjoy long-form games that last 7+ turns

Bad Match Ups

I've only found one terrible match up against this deck and a few cards that shut this down. I get absolutely tattered by Yawgmoth, Thran Physician . If someone pulls him out, I usually bargain with that player to let me be their vassal so I can come in second. Aura Shards sucks for me, and so does Freyalise, Llanowar's Fury . Those players will also get an automatic vassal.

Budget Cuts

Don't be intimidated by the large price tag; there's a lot of unnecessarily expensive cards in here that can be swapped for cheaper ones. The dual lands and fetches can be replaced with basics to get more mileage out of Ruination . The expensive artifact stax stuff can be swapped with creatures that have a similar effects. Those for whatever reason those cost less. You'll have to get creative if you don't want to use the swords; those are integral to the strategy and are usually the first things I tutor for. I guess there's things like Pentarch Ward , but those types of cards aren't as effective. If you're going for that angle, I recommend pro-creature enchantments over pro-a-color ones so you can avoid blockers when people play multi-colored decks.
