Why Mill and Why Lazav, Dimir Mastermind?

When I first started playing Magic: The Gathering years ago the first mythic rare I had ever pulled from a booster pack was Rise of the Dark Realms. In my sheer excitement I quickly built a mill deck and fell in love with the strategy from day one of trying it.

Though there are quite a few choices for mill commanders, I felt that Lazav, Dimir Mastermind would be the perfect commander to helm this deck. Lazav doesn't mill the opponents himself such as Mirko Vosk, Mind Drinker or enhance the efficiency of mill like Bruvac the Grandiloquent but instead acts as a payoff for milling our opponents. Lazav's natural hexproof makes him hard to remove and, because he copies our opponent's creatures, he can act as a balancer for the deck allowing him to be played in a variety of playgroups/power levels and still do some nasty work!

How The Deck Plays

The main focus of the deck is to mill opponents and gain value from their ever-expanding graveyards. The deck includes a small reanimation package with cards like Animate Dead and Reanimate that can be used on our opponents graveyards or our own. Wheel effects such as Windfall and Dark Deal help churn through our own deck as well as the opponents decks filling up graveyards even more.

Wincon and Combos

The deck has a variety of ways to close out a game. Here are a few notable combos and game winning spells.

Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank -Creates an infinite loop of draining life and milling decks.

Bruvac the Grandiloquent + Maddening Cacophony -Mills out all opponents libraries.

Consuming Aberration -When buffed with Rogue's Passage or Whispersilk Cloak it can easily one to two shot an opponent.

Guiltfeeder -Same as Consuming Aberration, can easily one to two shot opponents.

Rise of the Dark Realms -The main reason I built this deck. One of the most cherished cards in my collection. Cast this spell with Crashing Drawbridge on the field and watch your opponents lose all hope!
