Kuroi Ame: A Lesson in Futility

Commander / EDH* Counters Sacrifice Tokens WB (Orzhov)

Ainiv

A typical Orzhov Tokens & Counters strategy deck with a new spin. Commander and somewhat combat-centric with light Sacrifice themes sprinkled in as well.

Felisa is a fresh spin on the Orzhov tokens Commander archetype and breathes new life into the Mentor mechanic and the purpose of +1/+1 counters in a tokens deck. She gives extra resilience to powerful boardstates by replacing recently deceased minions with lesser but flying minions. That's really cool! The deck seeks to build a handful of strong dudes up with +1/+1 counters and attacking with them. Smaller guys can be "upgraded" to fliers with a Sacrifice outlet and Felisa's triggered ability. I would call the design simple yet elegant, with plenty of small synergies and card combinations to work with and get creative. The current iteration is not minmaxed and leaves room for upgrades. I would imagine that Felisa can reach "a powerlevel between a seven and an eight." Whatever that might mean to you.

Like all good tappedout lists by Ainiv, this one also includes accordion block-separated explanations of card inclusions and choices. So here they are:

There's a lot to cover in regards to card synergy, I will simply highlight the ones I like best in this section: Divine Visitation + Mikaeus the Lunarch + Hangarback Walker + Kaya's Wrath with Felisa. Archangel of Thune + Vault of the Archangel + Multiple attacking creatures. Shaile, Dean of Radiance synergizes well with Felisa after a boardwipe has happened. Silverquill Command can be used as a combat pump to increase Felisa's size to cheat with Mentor's power requirement!
The biggest weakness of this deck is not having Felisa around to do stuff. Thus I have heavily invested into protection: Cosmic Intervention has the fantastic flexibility of being cast whenever thanks to Foretell. Unbreakable Formation is flexible both as a pump for synergy but also just for protection. Teferi's Protection, Kaya's Ghostform and Selfless Spirit are all self-justifying excellent inclusions for this strategy. Ghostly Prison and Authority of the Consuls provide small amounts of Pillowfortress style protection. Together Forever is a pump enchantment that will save a key creature for a tiny mana investment. Ranger-Captain of Eos mainly fetches for Mikaeus but it can also be sacrificed for a form of protection. Kaya the Inexorable can provide resilience to high priority targets on the battlefield.
Packing plenty of flexible removal cards in this deck: Austere Command can be a selective boardwipe while hitting more problematic card types, not just creatures. Kaya's Guile, Silverquill Command, Liliana the Dreadhorde General and Plaguecrafter serve as targeted sacrifice removal. Return to Dust and Kaya the Inexorable single target exile problematic cards.

Thank you for checking out my list! Consider leaving a comment on how it could be improved and perhaps giving the deck an upvote as well. :)

And yes, the deck title is a reference to DJ Krush.
