K'rrik Goldfish - competitive EDH v0.9

Commander legal without the Wishclaw Talisman , which has yet to be released in the Throne of Eldaine expansion.

So in Commander 2019, WOTC introduced this bad boy: K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth . And let me tell you: The spikes on his body are no coincidence!

He is a very spikey commander that is able to generate tons of mana once he hits the table. He can grow even big and refill your life - and thus mana -due to his lifelink ability. The only downside to him is his mono-blackness, which means that we cannot rely on a whole lot of interaction outside of creature removal. This means that we have no efficient way to protect our commander without using the regular stax package, which is nevertheless also better in other colors.

So the only path we have left to stay competitive with this commander is speed, and - oh my - speed we have!

You will enjoy the deck if:

  1. Spike blood runs through your veins
  2. You don't want much interaction
  3. You like to win quickly
  4. You enjoy crushing all players at once
  5. You are patient enough to draw out the opposition's counterspells
  6. You can handle your math with the life totals
  7. You are not overwhelmed with many different ways of winning

Playing K'rrik Goldfish is all about mono-black philosophy: power at any cost. You will burn through your own life and deck, Sacrifice everything you have for that win.

This deck packs the most efficient 2-card win combos we have at our disposal in mono-black. In fact, a third of the deck solely consists of 2-card combos, reinforced with redundancy, so it is likely turn 1 to have several pieces in hand already (if not even a complete combo) plus a tutor to fetch the missing one. Cast K'rrik turn one or two, and then end the game on the same or the following turn. Although you should plan to kill on the same turn you cast K'rrik.

A fine strategy mid-game is to threaten the opponents with one combo-piece, let them neutralize it, and then follow through with a completely different way of winning. We are able to work our ways around different hate pieces and don't rely on single cards, not even our commander, to actually win the game. We can mill the opponents, have their life set to 0, kill them with regular damage or combat.

In the beginning you might feel a bit overwhelmed with the many different win conditions you can tutor for, and the deck therefore requires a little practice.

The longer the game progresses the more patient you will have to be. It is very possible to win mid-game should it get so far, by just slamming a 2-card combo without tutors/ramp after a counterspell/removal-war.

Aetherflux Reservoir + Leshrac's Sigil

This one is not necessarily a 2-card win because it requires your commander out. Also it is sorcery speed. You win by casting and bouncing the sigil over and over again. This can eventually lead to infinite life to blow the table. After casting K'rrik you are usually at 34 life or less. If you have cast only Reservoir and Sigil that turn you need at least 30 life to win the game on the spot. Keep in mind that the storm count also pumps K'rrik, and he can recharge your life pool with combat damage in case you are just below 30. Do the math! Blackhat mages love math! You need to get this going, or if you need to cast K'rrik first.

Aetherflux Reservoir + Sensei's Divining Top + Bolas's Citadel

Pretty much straightforward: You get to cast sensei's top repeatedly from the top of your library and kill the opponents with the storm count. Even if you only have half the combo assembled it is already a very deadly boardstate. You will need in total.

K'rrik, Son of Yawgmoth + Blood Celebrant

More a nice synergy than a combo. With Celebrant out, you can often win on the spot by casting your wincon at once. The celebrant is also a fine tutor target if you have no idea what to look for.

Archfiend of Despair + Fraying Omnipotence

You win by first halving every player's life total, then letting the opponents lose the other half. Even if they have "infinite" life (which is actually not infinite but a large number), you can kill. Needs . Chose Archfiend over Wound Reflection because we can reanimate it.

Morality Shift + Yawgmoth's Will / Empty the Pits

You can cast all of your library with YW, usually you will ramp up with all the rituals, mana-positive rocks and Blood Celebrant and then win with any 2-card combo. I like the instant speed of Empty the Pits which sometimes comes in handy as an EOT play. With the commander out the spell is basically free, and the horde of zombies you get should be enough to kill all foes most of the time. Needs or .

Repay in Kind + Lich

Your life total becomes zero, then everyone else follows you into the abyss. Only requires to win, but make sure that you have some floating to cast Repay in Kind , because you cannot pay life anymore with Lich out. A nice way to achieve this is by having one floating, with which to cast Sacrifice on K'rrik yielding us seven mana to cast repay in kind.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Triskelion

The Mike and Trike package everyone loves and hates. Triskelion gets to shoot the opposition once (or twice as zombie-triskelion) and them himself two times to be resurrected. Just as suicidal as we love it in black. Costs .

Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond

Only costs to assemble, and kills the table with infinite life drain once you pinged an opponent. Bond could be replaced with Defiant Bloodlord , since the creature could be reanimated.

Leyline of the Void + Helm of Obedience

Another well known 2-card combo, this one basically exiles an opponent's library one at a time. Costs or if Leyline was in the opening hand.

Painter's Servant + Grindstone

Total mill one opponent at a time. Requires .

Contamination + Bitterblossom / Dreadhorde Invasion

A 2-card combo lock for the opponent. Once assembled it will be very hard for the opponents to counter or to remove your wincons. Requires to set up. Notable mention here is Skullclamp , but I could not make room for it.

Razaketh, the Foulblooded + Gravecrawler

Needs K'rrik out. Can also be used as Razaketh + any other creature that is not K'rrik or Feeder. In that case you will need to fetch Crawler with the first sacrifice. You sac the Crawler to fetch Carrion Feeder , recast it, then sacrifice for Fishbowl ( Aetherflux Reservoir ), and then repeatedly sac and cast the crawler to the feeder for the aetherflux kill. Costs to go off.

Necrotic Ooze + Buried Alive

With ooze out, cast buried alive to get Triskelion + Phyrexian Devourer into the graveyard. Then win the game at instant-speed. Both Trike and Devourer can kill themselves if you decide to hardcast them. Needs .

Reanimate + Buried Alive

Bury Triskelion, Phyrexian Devourer and Necrotic Ooze as above, then reanimate the Ooze for the win. required with K'rrik in play.

Victimize + Buried Alive + creature in play

Bury Mike and Trike, bring both into play via Victimize. Requires with K'rrik out.

Vilis, Broker of Blood

This guy is pretty much Yawgmoth's Bargain in our deck, a fine tutor/reanimation target.

Behold the Beyond

This card is like a one-card combo on its own. If resolved, it could fetch you any complete wincon to win on the spot (with K'rrik out), such as Lich + Repay in Kind + Sacrifice .

Doomsday

A deck this dense with 2-card combos cannot miss Doomsday. There are many different possible piles, for instance:

Requires only 17 life total, K'rrik out, and a way to crack the pile, such as Sensei Top

Soldevi Adnate / Sacrifice / Culling the Weak

Those have proven extremely valuable, since they give you that little extra mana to spend where you cannot use life points. They can sac one of your mana dorks or even K'rrik to finish the combo.

Shizo, Death's Storehouse

I personally like this one. Enables a surprise attack with a pumped up K'rrik. Never forget that you can actually replenish life totals with K'rrik and you can go off post-combat main phase.

Beacon of Unrest

This one comes in quite handy, it enables non-creature artifact reanimation with Entomb .

Final Parting

Can fetch a reanimation target and Reanimate / Beacon of Unrest , to basically get any creature or artifact from your deck on the board. Can also get that Gravecrawler , Triskelion or Phyrexian Devourer into the grave and the other combo piece into your hand.
