Maybeboard

Creature (1)

This is a Korvold deck I've been working on for the past few months.

The idea is a mix of sacrifice triggers and landfall triggers.

...

On the sacrifice side of things you've got Korvold, Fae-Cursed King himself. Upon entering the battlefield I'll look for Clue Tokens, one of any of the various creature tokens that this deck manufactures, or even a Forest or Swamp. I don't worry about losing tempo when sacrificing a basic land because the deck has almost too much ramp.

Free, instant-speed, sacrifice outlets beyond Korvold, Fae-Cursed King are Altar of Dementia to mill, Ashnod's Altar for two colorless mana, Phyrexian Plaguelord for the -1/-1 effect on creatures and Yahenni, Undying Partisan to grant himself Indestructible. I've also added Viscera Seer because the Scry proves invaluable while searching for how you're going to kill everyone.

Meanwhile, most every other card in the deck has the word "sacrifice" printed on it somewhere. Even, and especially the lands.

...

The landfall side of things has you playing and cracking cards like Wooded Foothills, Bloodstained Mire, Evolving Wilds, Terramorphic Expanse, Myriad Landscape, and Fabled Passage so that you can capitalize on both the landfall triggers and the sacrifice triggers at the same time (given you've got the appropriate cards on the board).

Cards like Tireless Tracker provide value when the sacrificial lands come into play and Korvold, Fae-Cursed King gives you bonus value in the form of card draw and +1/+1 counters. Meanwhile the Clue Tokens can then be sacrificed for even more value. Value.

You might have noticed the inclusion of the seemingly underwhelming land, Gateway Plaza. The trick with this is, if you don't pay the one colorless mana you get to sacrifice it. This could mean a landfall trigger, a free card and +1/+1 for your land drop for turn in a tight spot. Or, if you're tight on a certain color, it taps for any color albeit on the next turn and after paying one colorless.

...

Now for the win conditions. There are several built into the deck.

The first is fairly obvious. Make Korvold, Fae-Cursed King huge through sacrifice triggers and fly overhead, into heads.

Secondly, and in no particular order, you've got Revel in Riches.

Cards like Dictate of Erebos help get you there, treasure-wise, if the direct damage from Mayhem Devil or the wipe of a Damnation doesn't. Pitiless Plunderer and Dockside Extortionist both provide additional Treasure support. And if that's not good enough both Doubling Season and Parallel Lives double your Treasure generation from such cards as Treasures count as tokens put into play under your control.

Thirdly, we have Torment of Hailfire. Given how much mana this deck tends to gain access to, this is a great finisher.

Fourthly, we've got Blood Artist triggers, Zulaport Cuttthroat triggers, and the like. What with the mass sacrifice of Eldrazi Spawn and Saprolings and Zombies and Elementals and Squirrels it's definitely possible to kill everyone this way with enough time and preparation. But that's true of most things I suppose.

Fifthly, (is that a word?) we have milling through Altar of Dementia. I'm not saying it's likely but late game, who knows what could happen? Maybe you're up against a Nekusar, the Mindrazer deck and they're dangerously close to milling themselves as is? Pros would probably tell you to mill yourself and recur whatever you want from the graveyard with Dread Return, Whisper, Blood Liturgist, Meren of Clan Nel Toth, Buried Ruin, Splendid Reclamation, Ramunap Excavator, and Victimize, but I'm not a pro so use your best judgment.

Sixthly, (definitely not a word), you've got Vraska, Golgari Queen. Her ultimate will allow your tokens or whatever creatures to one-shot your opponents. With Fires of Yavimaya in play you might be able to go wide suddenly and steal a win. Unlikely but, like I said above, you never know what could happen. With Doubling Season in play, maybe...?

Seventhly you have Insurrection to fall back on in case your own creatures just aren't cutting it. A nasty trick is to play Insurrection, swing and then sacrifice the stolen creatures for even more value. In other words, it can count as a rather expensive eight mana one-sided board wipe.

Finally there's a ton of ways to deal raw combat damage to people with the board states that this deck is capable of. Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest can get huge and make your wide tokens even taller and The Gitrog Monster is no slouch himself. Saprolings generated by your Tendershoot Dryad are almost guaranteed to be buffed by your City's Blessing and can therefore hit for three each.

...

The most recent change to this deck was swapping out Omnath, Locus of Rage for Phyrexian Altar. I was never excited to have Omnath in my hand. Meanwhile, I always needed more colored mana and Ashnod's Altar only got this deck so far before it stalled. It was an obvious choice that wasn't made earlier because I had to save up for the Altar (says the person who has Revised Dual lands...).

That's all I've got for now.

Thanks for looking and good hunting!
