Poison, as an archetype, is likely to get hated down by the table. Compared to a Fyn deck, Rats aren't consistently fast enough to get an opponent to 10 before you're dead, even with a dedicated infect suite. This deck works around that weakness.

This deck does three things:

  1. Mass discard through ETB and enchantments, to keep down the number of options opponents have to deal with the rats.

  2. Graveyard Recursion via spells and enchantments, with Ink Eyes and Nezumi Graverobber profiting from the discard. Our rats are small, their bodies frail. Death is expected. Because a good number (including the commander) have ETB effects, graveyard recursion allows you to get more value from their tiny bodies. Unless a player is running graveyard hate, you might want to let the commander go to the graveyard. Gravepurge and maybe footbottom feast let you stack the top of your deck to draw into dead rats with the commander.

  3. Rat swarming, which it's okay at but it's no marrow-gnawer. Karu can help with getting rats into the hand.

Trying to make rats chunky with Ashcoat or a totem is understandable but because the wincon is toxic / poison counters, a buff suite matters only for blockers. As Rats, defense is never an option. To get around opponent's chunky blockers, an evasion suite is included. It's more effective than chunky boys, as letting your opponent choose blockers means they'll likely choose the ninjas. Stax of meekstone, ensnaring bridge, and noetic scales are present to lock our opponents out of counterattacking. Ensnaring bridge is really good in this deck, as you'll likely be close to hellbent the entire game, but with one or two cards in hand, your tiny evasive boys can still get through.

This deck is designed within the context of its pod, which is a mid-power EDH pod with two severe timmy players who don't like playing interaction, protection, or recursion. Tutors are banned in the pod, as are 2-card infinite combos. This deck has a hard time with propaganda effects, pestilence effects, and superfriends. It being a jank mid-range infect/discard/graveyard suite, control eats its lunch. Reanimator clowns on this deck. Elesh Norn laughs in its face. There's so many things this deck is poor against, but it still feels more consistent as a Karumonix deck than many of the ones out there that are built around basic rat swarms and proliferate.
