Ahh, Karona. Thank god this card exists because I REALLY like Voltron commanders since I find them really fun to play, so why not let everyone have a turn!

OVERVIEW

Karona is pretty strong. Strange, and has weaknesses, but strong. If anyone at your table has sac outlets, give up now and play another deck, trust me, and you might want to think twice if you have a Tribal player, BUT, if there ARE no sac outlets, or your opening hand involves Assault Suit or Jon Irenicus, Shattered One, then go nuts! Probably!

This deck specifically excludes lifelink because we don't want to help our opponents THAT much, but the general gameplan is to suit Karona up with all sorts of nice goodies, indestructible or unblockable being important ones, and then start dishing out a LOT of damage, some of which will probably come straight back at you! We have many cards to fix that, thankfully.

A side note as well, if you weren't aware, you can in fact deal commander damage to yourself, so uh... yeah, try not to die to your own Karona's commander damage. How funny this is is legitimately a motivator for people to punch you.

Another side note, Karona has gotten an errata to make her creature type count as Avatar, so call that whenever you punch for that nice +3/+3.

NOTABLE CARDS

Assault Suit

Show

Karona's being passed around anyways, may as well stop her from getting sacrificed without your consent! Also gives a stat boost, so that's nice.

Alpha Authority

Show

Hexproof is hexproof, but the ability to only be blocked by a single creature can do a lot to help keep Karona alive when your opponents swing around with her.

Aqueous Form

Show

Unblockable is unblockable, but because YOU control the aura, YOU get the scry every time Karona attacks!

Armadillo Cloak

Show

Trample is trample, but because this doesn't give lifelink, YOU gain as much life as whatever damage Karona deals, no matter who's swinging with her!

Duelist's Heritage

Show

Lets you give Karona double strike at any time, whenever it's a good time to do that! A bad time to do that is when an opponent swings her back at you! Don't do it then! Genuinely this is better Flaming Fist just because you can turn it off.

Martial Impetus

Show

Goads Karona so that now your opponents can't attack you with her until the game is back to a 1v1! I'm not gonna mention EVERY goad card, since they all serve generally the same purpose. Martial Impetus is nice since it gives your opponents some incentive to swing their OTHER creatures, at OTHER players.

Vow of Wildness

I've included 4all of the Vow cards, this one is great because it gives the largest stat buff, as well as trample, but the key takeaway here is that they all say that the enchanted creature cannot attack you. Unlike goad, which says "must attack another opponent IF ABLE", allowing combat to resume as normal when the game gets to a 1v1, the Vows just straight-up stop Karona from EVER attacking you, no matter what.

Which is good.

Brash Taunter

This is probably the best anti-Karona persuasion method you can dig out that doesn't just straight-up stop her from attacking you in the first place. If they DO swing at you... well, blow back all that damage straight to their face, and when it gets back to your turn, you can have have the little dude fight Karona for more upfront damage if you don't NEED to keep him up as a blocker.

Jon Irenicus, Shattered One

Better Assault Suit, really. Give Karona away with his effect during your end step, it doesn't matter who you give it to since her first ability will transfer control anyways. Now she's +2/+2 bigger, is permanently goaded, and can never be sacrificed. On top of all of that, every time Karona attacks while under an opponent's control, and you control Jon, you draw a card. This dude does EVERYTHING you want. Also, there's nothing stopping you from giving her away again during EACH of your end steps to continue making her bigger with the counters.

Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant

Communal card draw. gotta make people like you somehow. Since we're building Karona to be swinging at everyone but us, this'll probably be giving us some much needed card draw. It'll help opponent's too, but I find it's worth it, you'll be drawing more cards yourself than each of your opponents will be individually.

Stuffy Doll

It's Brash Taunter at home. Nowhere near as good, but anti-Karona insurance is anti-Karona insurance.

Promise of Loyalty

The single most underrated boardwipe I know of. It sacrifices, getting rid of... basically everything, and the remaining single creature that each player chose gets a Vow counter, meaning it can never attack you so long as it has that counter. Karona gets one of those counters. And now the board is empty. Sure your opponents could just... NOT attack the others, but that'd be a bit silly of them. Another potential pick is Single Combat but I'm nowhere near as much of a fan of it as Promise of Loyalty.
