Finally Removed From the Ashes/DarksteelGarris —April 4, 2020

As a part of a really jank combo I was running Darksteel Garrison to equip to Valakut (when having 5 or more mountains out + a handful of nonbasics out) to then cast From the Ashes and trigger Valakut’s damage slinging. I only pulled it off once but I thought it was a neat idea to continue to try out. I decided recently to take out From the Ashes and Darksteel Garrison for Thornbite Staff and another Kamahl Combo enabler— Altar of the Brood.

This is an awesome deck. Definitely a +1 from me. I'm currently somewhat unhappy with Torbran. As I already do have a Kamahl I do play in that deck, I might switch commanders.

Regardless, a card you should try is Thornbite Staff. It's expensive to equip to anything but a druid, but once it's attached to an efficient pinger, wiping the whole board is not a problem at all, and even less so with the basilisk collar I see in your maybeboard.

Repercussion would be a great include, but it's just so expensive.

Edit: holy...how is Thornbite Staff 8 bucks?

Vicious Shadows Seems like a very, very good card in this deck. VERY good.

seshiro_of_the_orochi thanks for commenting! Kamahl is something I wanted to do because he was a part of the first set I ever played with and I also love the lore regarding his character. He is expensive at 6 cmc and no defense at 1, but he’s a ton of fun to build around.

I’ve never thought about Thornbite Staff! Definitely something I’ll consider and even play test out. This deck was never intended to be so artifact heavy but it’s come out really nice because of that.

I like the idea of Repercussion as well. It’s something else I would toy around with but unsure of what I would take out. Do you see one or two cards on my list you would take out for the staff or repercussion? I’m all ears!

Annexus thanks for the comment! Haven’t thought of that card in here! It’s a good suggestion—expensive cmc wise but could have massive pay off. Will consider it. Thanks!

Looking through the list, I don't understand the reason for including Darksteel Garrison and Fireshrieker. Those might be good cards to kick for Staff and Repercussion. And it even lover your mana curve.

So I can see why you say Darksteel Garrison. I have it in currently for a real janky combo involving Valakut (read section above in Primer). But the more I think about it the more not-worth-it thhat whole combo seems. I don’t play much these days anyway but I’ve never been able to pull it off since it involves 3 specific cards. With that said, I think I agree with both your picks. I’ll think it over and decide if I want to remove that Valakut combo feom the deck.

I obviously missed that part in your description. The combo is fun, but it's just super far away from the rest of your strategy. A deck where it really could shine is Zo-Zu the Punisher.

I'd love to hear from you once you have results from your testing.
