The Lonely

This deck is thematically based on The Lonely, one of the eldritch entities from The Magnus Archives podcast. It is part of a collection of decks I'm building, each themed after a different entity. The idea behind this project was to find a commander (or an Avatar, if you will) for each entity and build a deck around that theme.

With that in mind, Jorn brings a nice theme of blizzard and winter isolation that I think fits nicely into The Lonely. I'll probably add more to this description later, but I wanted to put something out for this deck, since it's the first Magnus-themed deck I've managed to compile here.

Strategically Significant Cards

Kruphix, God of Horizons is sort of the cornerstone of this deck, doing pretty much what it says on the tin. It allows me to amass huge amounts of mana and cast a few big spells and creatures that trample over opponents. They also give you a mana pool to pull from, so you can use your snow lands to buff a creature like Hailstorm Valkyrie to unholy proportions without slowing yourself down.

Abominable Treefolk fits perfectly in this deck, because as long as you have a good number of snow lands on the field, he'll be a big, intimidating trampler. He's the kind of niche card I love throwing into a deck when I can. He also combos really nicely with something like Triumph of the Hordes when you have that option.

Maze of Ith allows you to tap and remove Jorn from combat so you get those sweet sweet untap triggers without having to worry about losing your commander. Really nice in later game when your opponents have blockers or larger creatures up, and it's harder to destroy than your average artifact.

Leyline of Anticipation is massively helpful for casting card draw effects at instant speed, so by the time your turn comes around you have plenty to do. It also allow you to sneak out a Triumph of the Hordes during combat, which is just really fun.

Thematically Significant Cards

Fog isn't doing too much for the strategy (besides protecting you from unplanned combat damage if necessary), but fog is a central aspect of the Lonely, and it felt wrong to leave this card out of the deck. Fog is here as a harbinger of the Lonely's eldritch influence.

Exclusions

Vedalken Orrery is wonderful, but I find the roulette wheel of Leyline of Anticipation more entertaining, and perhaps a bit spookier, on-brand for a Magnus Archives deck. I could have both (why not both? Both is good), but I ended up swapping it out to have a tutor in the deck, with the idea that if I find myself wanting to flash things out, I might be able to tutor up Leyline.

Exsanguinate is one of my favorite cards in MTG because it's absolutely brutal in the right circumstance. I just haven't found a slot for it here, though maybe it'll have one in the future.
