Sideboard

OUT

IN (replacing the OUT cards correspondingly);

  • Gaddock Teeg - Shuts down more shenanigans than the Thopteryx, and only prevents my Urza's Ruinous Blast from being cast. Seems like a fair tradeoff.
  • Boromir, Warden of the Tower - free Deadly Rollicks have removed Jodah more than anything else, so shutting down my opponents’ freebies seems super relevant. Wrath protection on a body is nice too!
  • Sakura-Tribe Elder - a buddy pointed out to me that there’s no point in running Rampant Growth in a deck that doesn’t already have good ol’ Steve. It blocks!
  • Kyodai, Soul of Kamigawa - I’ve always wanted Gerrard to do something meaningful, but it honestly has never done shit in any deck I’ve thrown him in. Kyodai has flash and protects a thing from spot removal, plus can get pumped!
  • Delighted Halfling - probably an auto-include in all Jodah decks going forward. I mean, come on!
  • Aura Shards - I mostly put it in here because I don’t have another deck with . There’s certainly no shortage of creatures ETBing in this deck, and no shortage of things to blow up.
  • Wood Elves - Leyline Immersion was a dead card on curve twice. Wood Elves costs one less, and is more easily cast on T2.
  • Ertai Resurrected - Rienne never actually did anything for me in this deck. Ertai is a counterspell/killspell that triggers Jodah! Sweet.

OUT

IN (replacing the OUT cards correspondingly);

  • Toxic Deluge - Cascading into a board wipe while trying to establish a board seems counterintuitive. Deluge is likely to be a one-sided board wipe while Jodah is in play, which seems pretty damned good!

  • Child of Alara - Replacing the other sylex. Having a huge trampler is awesome, and there’s enough ways to protect the board to justify the risk of running a walking board wipe.

  • Bloom Tender - It’s faster than the shaman, and can make a ton more mana. And my new Raggadragga deck seems to be a much better home for the shaman.

  • Lagrella, the Magpie - I need something that can deal with my opponents’ big beefy boys. Cascading into this should feel great! Inga and Esika’s mana ability just feels too slow for 4 mana.

  • The Peregrine Dynamo - My Hofri Ghostforge is in Japanese, and it does too much stuff for me to remember what it does without pulling up the gatherer. Looking through the deck, the majority of legends in the deck have some sort of triggered or activated ability, and it seems totally worth it to double up on some of them.

  • Myrel, Shield of Argive - She’s much easier to cast than Yidris, with a nice static ability to boot.

  • Kethis, the Hidden Hand - Going back in the deck! Playing Jegantha on T4 potentially is too good to pass up.

OUT

IN (replacing the OUT cards correspondingly);

  • Shaman of Forgotten Ways - Because cascading into a legendary dork feels bad. Backup win conditions are cool too.
  • Gilded Goose - Cascading into Skrelv, the only 1-drop legend in the deck, after playing a 2 drop felt too annoying and time consuming, so I'm replacing it with potential T1 ramp.
  • Gold-Forged Thopteryx - I will happily cut a tutor for early Shalai-esque protection.
  • Leyline Immersion - I almost feel like they made this card for this deck. Holy moly.
  • Sigarda, Font of Blessings - Raff Capashen never impacted any games he was played in. This new Sigarda, however, will impact every game its played in. Couple this with Shalai, Voice of Plenty or Sakashima of a Thousand Faces to give hexproof to the whole board.
  • Nashi, Moon's Legacy - Kethis discounting 2/3rds of the cards in my deck was certainly nice, but I don't think I ever used his second ability to recur anything from the graveyard. Nashi has evasion, and can "recur" things much more easily.
  • Goro-Goro and Satoru - Uro felt "okay" on T3, but otherwise would feel pretty bad. This card gives haste and potentially pumps out dragons, which seems more in line with how I want this deck to play.
  • Karlach, Fury of Avernus - cutting Surrak for this feels weird, but I feel like having an extra combat and untapping all the attacking things provides a level of utility that compensates for the lack of trample.
  • Inga and Esika - Cadric suffered from the same problem as Raff Capashen. This card can potentially do things the turn it comes into play. Giving the team vigilance is huge!
  • Samut, Vizier of Naktamun - I pulled the fancy shiny version of this amazing card and had to throw it in here.

CONSIDERING

Jegantha and Jodah are best friends. ❤️

I’m not going to make a primer, but I’ll briefly explain this beautiful mess.

This deck is very straightforward: capitalize off of Jodah, the Unifier’s ability alongside the dozen other legendary-matters cards. Turn big creatures with ridiculous abilities sideways at your opponents!

The other aspect of this deck is being able to protect your board as much as possible. There’s 4 counterspells in the deck, two of which cost 0. There’s also 4 spot-removal spells in the deck, all of which can target any permanent (with the exception of Anguished Unmaking). Ratadrabik of Urborg, Hofri Ghostforge, Hajar, Loyal Bodyguard, Linvala, Shield of Sea Gate, Rienne, Angel of Rebirth, and Heroic Intervention all serve as wrath protection.

My closers I usually go for are Odric, Lunarch Marshal or Kamiz, Obscura Oculus, but sheer overwhelming value and big numbers will also suffice. There’s numerous ways to give creatures trample and/or haste, which are the main keywords I’m looking for while I’m turning big dummies sideways.

Jegantha, the Wellspring serves as a way to nerf this deck ever-so-slightly, with the added benefit of being a dork that can help cast my commander. Jodah is the only WUBRG spell in the deck, but Jegantha’s ability to help cast things like Maelstrom Wanderer is pretty huge.

My playgroup Rule 0s Companions to be played as printed, but Jegantha can also be used to reliably trigger Jodah if cast from hand.

The beauty of a deck like this is being so open-ended – everything in this deck can be adjusted for various budgets, metas and ideas. I initially built Jodah, the Unifier as a 5C legendary stax deck, with cards like Gaddock Teeg and Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite, but the dark side proved to be a little too strong.

Wanna make legendary wizard tribal? Go for it! Wanna take out Jegantha and play gross cards like Toxrill, the Corrosive and Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger? Knock yourself out. Just play the legendary creatures you like and have fun!

I hope y’all enjoy this deck. Cheers!
