Jhoira Combos!

This deck, featuring Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain, runs many infinite combos and plenty of tutors to get them out ASAP. That's the main goal; to blow up then act like you don't know nobody.

  1. Tutor for or draw into Combo Pieces.

  2. Play Combo Pieces.

  3. Win game.

Words of Wind + Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain//Vedalken Archmage + Mana Crypt + Sol Ring.

Results:

  • Infinite Storm

  • Infinite Colorless Mana

  • Infinite opponent-controlled permanent bounce to their own hand

  • Infinite Artifact ETB

Requires:

How it works:

If Mana Crypt or Sol Ring is on the battlefield and the other is in your hand, skip steps 1 & 2.

  1. Cast Mana Crypt by paying .

  2. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain//Vedalken Archmage triggers, causing you to draw a card.

  3. Tap Mana Crypt for .

  4. Activate Words of Wind by paying .

  5. Cast Sol Ring by paying .

  6. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain//Vedalken Archmage triggers, which is replaced by the Words of Wind trigger, causing each player to return a permanent from the battlefield to their hand. Target Mana Crypt with this ability.

  7. Tap Sol Ring for .

  8. Activate Words of Wind by paying , leaving a floating mana.

  9. Cast Mana Crypt by paying .

  10. Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain//Vedalken Archmage triggers, which is replaced by the Words of Wind trigger, causing each player to return a permanent from the battlefield to their hand. Target Sol Ring with this ability.

Notes:

  • Sol Ring and Mana Crypt are interchangeable in this combo. It does not matter which order you use them, but I wrote this guide starting with Mana Crypt to make it easier to follow.

  • Mana Vault works in this combo if you have the additional requirement of to cast it the first time.

  • This combo also works with most cmc artifacts, but that combo doesn't produce infinite mana unless the cmc artifact is Mox Opal and you have extra artifacts on the battlefield as well.

Mystic Forge + Sensei's Divining Top + (Etherium Sculptor // Foundry Inspector // Enthusiastic Mechanaut)

Results:

  • Infinite Storm

  • Infinite Artifact ETB

  • Infinite Card Draw

Requires:

  • All permanents on the battlefield

How it works:

  1. Activate Sensei's Divining Top by tapping it, drawing a card, and putting Sensei's Divining Top on top of your library.

  2. Using Mystic Forge's ability and the cost reducer's cost reduction, play Sensei's Divining Top from the top of your library for free.

  3. Repeat.

Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter + Mana Rocks that for (+ Sensei's Divining Top)

Results:

Requires:

How it works:

  1. Cast Isochron Scepter, imprinting Dramatic Reversal.

  2. Use Isochron Scepter to cast Dramatic Reversal, untapping all non-land permanents (including mana rocks and the Isochron Scepter itself).

  3. Tap mana rocks to use Isochron Scepter's ability again, keeping leftover mana in your mana pool, generating infinite mana.

With Sensei's Divining Top:

Results:

  • Infinite Storm

  • Infinite Draw

Requires:

How it works:

  1. Tap Sensei's Divining Top, then hold priority.

  2. Cast Dramatic Reversal through Isochron Scepter in response to the Top's tap trigger.

  3. Resolve Dramatic Reversal's trigger, untapping Isochron Scepter, Sensei's Divining Top, and mana rock(s).

  4. Tap Sensei's Divining Top, then hold priority. There are now two Top draw triggers on the stack.

  5. Continue tapping and untapping Top, adding as many draw triggers as cards you'd like to draw.

  6. Resolve the most recent Top trigger on the stack to draw a card and put Top on top of your library.

  7. Resolve the next most recent Top trigger on the stack to draw a card. This card is the Top. There is no Top to target for the second part of this ability. (Even though the Top is now in your hand, it is an illegal target for the resolution of the ability.)

  8. Resolve the next most recent Top trigger on the stack to draw a card. There is no Top to target.

  9. Repeat to draw as many as you like.

Battered Golem + (Retraction Helix // Banishing Knack) + (Sol Ring // Mana Crypt // Mana Vault // and sometimes Mox Opal)

Results:

  • Infinite Artifact ETB

  • Infinite Storm

  • Infinite Mana

Requires:

How it works:

  1. Cast Retraction Helix // Banishing Knack by paying , targeting Battered Golem.

  2. Activate Battered Golem by tapping it, returning mana positive rock to your hand.

  3. Cast mana positive rock.

  4. Mana positive rock enters the battlefield, triggering Battered Golem, which untaps itself.

  5. Tap mana positive rock and leave mana floating.

  6. Repeat steps 2-4, generating infinite ETB, infinite mana, infinite storm. With Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain on the battlefield, it also generates infinite card draw.

Notes:

  • Can replace the mana positive rock with almost any cost artifact, but it will only generate infinite ETB and Storm, NOT infinite mana.

  • This combo is incredibly reliable, and easily tutorable. All pieces of the combo synergize with this deck individually as well as part of the combo. cost artifacts are card draw with Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain, and artifact affinity. Mana rocks are card draw and ramp together, plus storm in many cases. Banishing Knack and Retraction Helix are viable interactions for disrupting opponent plays.

Aetherflux Reservoir + Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain + Hurkyl's Recall // Paradoxical Outcome // Rebuild // Retract + Any Cheap Artifact Spells

Though not an infinite or immediately game-winning combo, it provides a ton of value and it can win the game. For that, an honorable mention is warranted. Throw in an artifact cost reducer or two and you've got even more value and an even better shot at winning.

Aetherflux Reservoir has a pretty unique effect. Whenever you cast a spell, you gain 1 life for each spell cast this turn. Let me break down why that is important.

  • When you cast your first spell, you gain 1 life. Great. If it's an historic spell, it triggers Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and you draw 1 card.

  • When you cast your second spell, you gain 2 life (one for each spell you've cast this turn; the first and this one). You are now at +3 life this turn. If it's an historic spell, it triggers Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and you draw 1 card.

  • When you cast your third spell, you'll gain 3 life (see where this is going?). You are now at +6 life this turn. If it's an historic spell, it triggers Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain and you draw 1 card.

  • Continue casting all the spells you can, gaining life and drawing cards, but MAKE SURE TO LEAVE ENOUGH MANA FOR THE ARTIFACT BOUNCE SPELL. There are many cheap/free artifacts in this deck and many of them tap for mana to continue casting spells with. Instant spells won't trigger Jhoira for card draw, but they generate extra Aetherflux Reservoir lifegain triggers. See note at end for details.

  • When you run out of cheap artifact/instant spells to cast, play your mass artifact bounce spell to put all your artifacts into your hand. Don't forget to add this spell to the Aetherflux Reservoir count.

  • Play all of your artifacts again, triggering Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain's draw ability and Aetherflux Reservoir's lifegain ability each time.

By this point, you will have gained a ton of life and drawn a ton of cards. Maybe by now you've drawn into one of the game-winning combos. Maybe you even drew into another mass artifact bounce spell to do another round. Maybe you have 100+ life and want to zap two of your opponents to death with Aetherflux Reservoir. It's a win-win-win.

Note about casting instants with Aetherflux Reservoir Show

In an example where you cast 5 instants, each in response to the Aetherflux trigger from the previous, you would gain 25 life (5 x 5) instead of 15 (1 + 2 + 3 + 4 + 5).

  • Either cast Walking Ballista from your hand where = or, if it's already on the battlefield, use the infinite mana to add counters using its first activated ability. Then use its second activated ability to remove counters one by one, dealing your opponents as much damage as necessary.

  • Cast Conflagrate where = to deal that damage to your opponents.

NOTE: This does not work if Laboratory Maniac is anywhere but in your library, hand, or on the battlefield.

  • Have Aetherflux Reservoir on the battlefield. Each time you cast a spell, you add increasing amounts of life from Aetherflux Reservoir's first ability. Once you have enough life, you can use its second ability to zap your opponents to death.

  • Cast Grapeshot. It copies itself for each spell cast before it this turn, which allows infinite damage to all your opponents.

  • Have Altar of the Brood on the battlefield. Since most of the combos that generate infinite storm do so by casting and bouncing artifacts, Altar of the Brood will have your opponents mill their decks. NOTE: This does not work with the Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal combo; no permanents are entering the battlefield

  • Have Altar of the Brood on the battlefield. Every time a permanent ETBs, opponents mill. Once no cards are left in either deck, pass the turn and they lose when they cannot draw.
There are several tutors available in this deck. Without the black tutors, options for finding any card are extremely limited. However, there are many tutors that can find many vital cards for the combos.

1. Tolaria West

Tolaria West is a land that enters tapped and can tap for . More importantly, it can transmute to find any card with CMC . This means that you can tutor for creatures like Walking Ballista, Ornithopter, Phyrexian Walker, or Memnite. You can also use it to find certain mana rocks like Mana Crypt, Mox Opal, or Mox Diamond. You can even use it to find a land, including the artifact lands Seat of the Synod and Great Furnace. Worst case scenario, you can tutor for Spellbook for a free draw if Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain is out.

2. Trinket Mage

Trinket Mage is a great add to this deck. With it, you can find all of the artifacts listed above, as well as other cost artifacts, like Sol Ring, Sensei's Divining Top, and Mana Vault.

3. Drift of Phantasms

Drift of Phantasms is an interesting card as well. A flying 0/5 wall can be useful on its own, but with it's Transmute ability, this is a good add. This card can tutor for Battered Golem, Trinket Mage, or Fabricate to find those vital artifact pieces for your combo.

4. Gamble

Oh boy. Gamble. Tutors for any card, discard one at random. Can be incredibly useful, but also incredibly risky. Try not to use this card for your last combo piece because there is a good chance (depending on your hand size) that you'll have to discard one of those pieces. This is certainly an early-game card, or a "I have 30 cards in my hand" card.

5. Mystical Tutor

Mystical tutor is fantastic in this deck. It can find crucial combo cards like Dramatic Reversal, Grapeshot, Banishing Knack, Conflagrate, and Retraction Helix. It's worth noting that Mystical Tutor puts the tutored card on top of your deck, not in your hand, but is still an incredible tutor. Can also tutor for Gamble if you're desperate for a specific card!

6. Muddle the Mixture

I love this card. In addition to being a quality counter, you can transmute the spell for any card with CMC. Though there aren't a whole lot of 2 CMC cards worth tutoring for, some of them are huge parts of this deck. Cards like Isochron Scepter, Dramatic Reversal, Grapeshot, Etherium Sculptor, or Enthusiastic Mechanaut. Also, because it's a good counter, this will never be a dead card in your hand.

7. Imperial Recruiter

Fantastic tutor for any weak creature, of which this deck runs plenty. Can tutor to find Enthusiastic Mechanaut, Etherium Sculptor, Laboratory Maniac, Memnite, Ornithopter, Phyrexian Walker, and Walking Ballista to fill out your combo pieces, as well as fellow tutors Drift of Phantasms and Trinket Mage.

8. Fabricate

Fabricate is debatably the best tutor in this deck. With such an emphasis on artifacts, tutoring any artifact into your hand is invaluable. This can get you cards like Isochron Scepter, Aetherflux Reservoir, Walking Ballista, Battered Golem, any mana rock, any cost reducer, or any other artifact in the deck. No matter how luckily you draw your combos, this card will always be useful to find something helpful.

9. Inventors' Fair

This land is a great utility in this deck. Taps for colorless, and if you have 3+ artifacts on the battlefield (which will likely be always) it gives life and allows you to tutor for any artifact card. See Fabricate above for tutor targets.

This deck can be incredibly fast with the luck of the draw, and can even win on turn 1 with this perfect hand:

1. Sol Ring or Mana Crypt or Mana Vault

2. Sol Ring or Mana Crypt or Mana Vault

3. Any Land

4. Isochron Scepter

5. Dramatic Reversal

6. Walking Ballista or Aetherflux Reservoir

The above combo uses only 6 cards. This leaves a lot of room for additions. For example, having a Mox Opal in the seventh card slot opens card slot 6 up to Grapeshot and Conflagrate as wincons for the combo. Card slots 1-3 are there to generate a total of to play and activate Isochron Scepter. Any way you generate the 4 mana will work, which is easier to do with the extra card slot. Add an extra land and sub Sol Ring for Mox Diamond and you win if you have Mana Vault. There's lots of options that will work around this combo.

This deck runs:

  • 7x Fetchlands that can find any land that is a Mountain, or an Island, or both.

  • 1x Each of the colored Dual Land, Check Land, Fast Land, Pain Land, and Shock Land.

  • 2x Artifact Lands

  • 10x Basic Lands

As well as the following unique lands:

*Tolaria West enters the battlefield tapped every time it ETBs... so don't play it as a land. It's too slow. This also is a tutor for any land or 0 cmc artifact. Can be very useful for finding combos or ramp. Best to draw into it, not start with it in your hand.
