Welcome to my Mizzix of the Izmagnus deck! This deck came from my desire to build a deck unlike any of the others in my current EDH stable. First, I went outside my usual color pallette of B/x. Secondly, I focused on a spellslinger deck style, something I have never really tried before. When I was choosing a spellslinger deck, Izzet seemed to be the obvious choice, and Mizzix of the Izmagnus jumped out to me as a powerful commander.

The primary focus of the deck is to capitalize on Mizzix of the Izmagnus' cost-reduction ability to cast several, impactful spells per turn. In addition, I've included several on-cast triggers to gain further value from our spell casts.

When it comes to Izzet commanders, most of them have something to do with casting spells. What drew me specifically to Mizzix of the Izmagnus was that her ability reduces card cost. One of the most powerful abilities in MTG is cheating mana cost, and here we have an engine that does just that in our command zone. Interestingly enough, I also seem to be a fan of experience counters, as this marks my third experience counter commander!
Some cards have a place in (nearly) every EDH deck. Most of these so-called staples serve one purpose: color fixing. As the number of colors in a deck increases, so too does the need for color fixing. The primary method of color fixing in the deck is through effective use of dual and fetch lands. My research on the topic has lead me to create what I believe to be an optimized mana base for the deck. This was achieved by removing as many tap lands as possible and replacing them with dual lands that have a way to enter the battlefield untapped.

Removal is a key concept in many EDH decks. This particular deck has the ability to counter spells, which are a proactive form of removal. The key deciding factor for removal spells in this deck is versatility. Any spell that does more than simply destroy a creature is an outstanding choice. In this deck, our removal is mostly in the form of counterspells and direct damage.

  • AEtherize - More often than not, a one-sided board wipe and significant setback for an opponent

  • Arcane Denial - The benchmark for counterspells that negate card disadvantage
