Walking into FNM, I knew it was going to get mixed results. My Smoldering Marshes still hadn't arrived and for some reason there was 61 cards in my deck, and I couldn't figure out what the extra card was. I also was using a bad sideboard, as I haven't actually built one yet. That being said, it went pretty well!
Round 1 (0-2 against WU Spirits)
This round hurt. I played the exact same deck on untap multiple times and each time beat it with ease. Unfortunately, I failed to shuffle my deck beforehand, resulting in bad hands with all the cards sticking together. Unable to get anything going, I lost easily.
Round 2 (2-0 against BU Pauper Zombies)
Round 2 went very smoothly. I got my discard triggers and easily dispatched the zombies. Sidenote: Kalitas is very good against zombies
Round 3 (2-1 against 4 color Big Creatures)
I'm not sure how to describe the deck I was facing. It didn't use ramp or anything, instead electing to drop big creatures and planeswalkers around turn 5 and go from there. I lost game one as I was unable to hit hard enough fast enough, but after siding out masquerade and temper, as they couldn't help against Ulvenwald Hydras I was able to take them out.
Round 4 (0-2 against GW Human Control)
My deck drew everything it needed, but couldn't keep up against a slew of Stasis Snare and Declaration in Stone. Even though I was able to significantly weaken my opponent, it wasn't enough as I was finished off by Sigarda and Avacyn
Recap
The deck was inconsistent early but smoothed out over the course of the day. Despite going 2-2 I still performed well enough to place 8th, as I lost to 2 of the top 4 finishers. The deck lacks the staying power that I hoped cards like Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet and Bloodhall Priest would give it. Stensia Masquerade was helpful at times, but is ineffective against control decks and large creatures. I plan to complete a sideboard soon, and possibly move Tormenting Voice to the mainboard to give my deck more staying power. I leave for college tomorrow so I may leave this deck untouched for a couple weeks, but as always any feedback is greatly appreciated!
