I Put a Spell On You // Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor

Commander / EDH Curse Donate Enchant UBR (Grixis)

Patch 2.1

Skipping past minor updates entirely with version 2.0 of the Curse deck! After playing with friends a few times--even getting a win once--I have been able to hone in on the strengths and weaknesses of the first Lynde build I had and find a few good replacements to add oomph and debauchery to the deck that will give us more utility and less chaff.

The first and foremost major change is the addition to "Donate" win conditions: We run the eponymous card & effect with a few other tagalongs such as Harmless Offering, Puca's Mischief and Role Reversal we give or exchange control of our opponent's good stuff with enchantments such as Demonic Pact, Nefarious Lich, Forbidden Crypt and Illusion's of Granduer for an instant KO or 20dmg hit while we are 20 ahead.

Many of the above win conditions may need to be coupled with a Bojuka Bog or Agent of Erebos, which we've included to ensure we can both proc those win conditions swiftly as we bully our Aristocrat / Graveyard friends which play a prominent role in my own meta. Customize as you need here, but I've also included a Tergrid, God of Fright   for added security against graveyard recursion. Another important step to the win conditions is the Donate spells actually resolving, so we are packing in a few extra counterspells with some extra utility: Ice Out gives us the option to Bargain another curse or enchantment to either save our skin from Forbidden Crypt or killing a curse on an opponent to get some card draw rolling with Lynde, Cheerful Tormentor--The same reason we include Claws of Gix in this build. Perplex can counter and possibly trigger for Tergrid, or Transmute into another piece we may need, which brings me to a second big change in the deck that will be covered in the next section.

Every good witch will know her fair share of spells, and if she doesn't she surely knows how to consult her spellbook efficiently. The addition of several Tutors to the deck gives us access to the table of contents and lets us search for the exact incantation we need to deal with those oh-so-annoying planeswalking opponents of ours. Ringsight, Profane Tutor and Demonic Tutor are easy additions, adding more as needed through playtesting and experimentation. Don't forget; Cast your Mystical Tutor during your Upkeep before your Draw step, and tutor for ! The same applies to Vampiric Tutor.

Finally, adding in City on Fire gives us some really big damage on cards like Curse of Thirst if we are focusing down one opponent; Couple that with a Solphim, Mayhem Dominus, Curse of Bloodletting, or even a Mirrormade and a simple "draw 2 take 2" from Nekusar, the Mindrazer turns into "Draw two, take 48". Putting heat on a single player, especially the biggest threat on the table, gives emphasis to the other players that we are just out for one person and will lead to them either keeping to their own battles or focusing on the same opponent as you... "Kick 'em while they're down", and then we surprise the remaining opposition with curses from Lynde's ability returning or another Donate win condition, hopefully, we've established a bit of a defensive line beforehand; Politic as you may.

In summary, Patch 2.0 and through this version is more focused on controlling the game and making big instant-KO plays. Stacking curses on one person is fun, but the vast majority of curses in MtG are at the moment quite underwhelming, and we need a bit more in our hands to have a shot at winning or competing against stronger builds than our own. I think these changes will add a level of thrill and excitement to the playstyle, as well as a few less feelbads for opponents who were once before getting curse stacked left and right all game!

Do you have any other Donate win conditions in Grixis that I missed? Let me know in the comments section! Thanks for checking it out, and enjoy the sexy hexes!

Lynde is a super cutie in the Grixis pie and I have been eyeing her as a Commander for quite some time now. I'm curious to see how this deck plays out and I anticipate very few wins with it, but there are some interesting possibilities on the table with unique interactions like Puca's Mischeif that could be giving us double-benefit trading curses already on a player with something more appealing on the board.

Countermagic is in place to try and protect the aforementioned enchantment, but I suspect my opponents might be more inclined to remove the curses on them before removing enchantments on my side of the board... A difficult choice indeed on where to use the precious removal! And of course, any one player that attracts the ire of our beloved lady Lynde will see their luck fading fast as curses begin to stack up on them.

Paradox Haze is another centerpiece here to really get a lot of value from Lynde, allowing us to re-draw our hands quite efficiently and keep threats constantly on the board. Combined with Claws of Gix activation at the end of our counter-clockwise player's turn and the value ramps up from Lynde substantially, drawing cards then attaching another curse to an opponent. Grim Guardian and Doomwake Giant are auto-includes in this enchantment heavy deck, and with Lynde's ability on the stack we can really start bringing down the pain boardwiping opponents low-toughness creatures quite efficiently.

Nekusar, the Mindrazer makes an appearance as a must-have for all my grixis decks, but he doesn't do terribly here either. Introducing some card draw pain with Curse of Bloodletting and Curse of Fool's Wisdom can start to stack up, and other players will be dissuaded to draw while Nekusar is present if Curse of Surveillance is tempting them.

All in all, I think the deck will be delightfully insidious and eventually become a "kill it quick" deck that has high potential to impact the entire board!
