Gary Motherf*cking Oak (AKA Gray Merchant of Asphodel) is now as scary as the iconic villain Darkseid.

Gary may not win in Pokemon, but he and his mono-black comrades have been taking the Standard season by storm. Now it's time to transition into Modern.

Modern gives us a whole new batch of black devotion goodies to chose from.

Phyrexian Obliterator has a very powerful ability and gives 4 devotion. He comes out early and stays relevant late game. What's not to like?

Modern opens up powerful boardwipes like Mutilate, which is very effective with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth.

Creakwood Liege gives 3 devotion with a boost abilities, and the ability to make 3/3 tokens.

Abrupt Decay can hit probably 80% of the biggest threats in Modern, including Liliana of the Veil and Tarmogoyf. It's also uncounterable.

Maelstrom Pulse can hit all the things the Abrupt Decay misses, and kills off huge armies of tokens (coughcoughSplinter Twincough).

Phyrexian Arena lets me draw, and gives 2 devotion that is harder to remove than most normal creatures.

Gnat Miser replaces Deathrite Shaman in the 1-drop slot. I weep over the lost versatility, but Gary is satisfied because it still provides devotion. And since it cuts my opponent's hand sizes, it provides a useful ability that cuts my opponent's card advantage.

Bloodghast gives me 2 devotion and keeps pressure on my opponent. They also can't get rid of it for long- as soon as I drop a land, it's back!

Thoughtseize is the best discard spell in the game. 'Nuff said.

Vampire Nighthawk 4thelulz.

And of course, you know all about Gary.

Sideboard description:

Extirpate gets rid of any threats as soon as they hit the graveyard. And, with Split second, it can't be responded to either.

Leyline of the Void gets rid of everything my opponent puts in his or her graveyard, leaving mine alone. Best part is, I can cast it for free!

Liliana of the Veil because Liliana of the Veil. It's that simple. Shouldn't all black decks be running her?

Profane Command is super versatile- opponent loses life, reanimation for Gary for more life loss, creature removal, or fear shenanigans. And I get to choose 2 of those options for 1!

Spellskite protects my Deathrite Shamans, Phyrexian Obliterators, and even me. It's the ultimate "take one for the team" creature.

Torpor Orb may shut down my Gary, but it also stops my opponent's Garys as well, and the oodles of other ETB creatures. If you board these in, Gary probably shouldn't be in either.

So, who thinks they get this reference?

Updates Add

Since Deathrite Shaman's been banned (like a month ago...), I'm testing Guul Draz Assassin in its place.

EDIT: I forgot you couldn't level up at instant speed. So Guul Draz Assassin is out and replaced with Gnat Miser.
