How to Train Your Ur-Dragon

Commander / EDH*

Welcome to The Ur-Dragon fellow dragon trainers! This list is not optimized for competitive play but can hold it's own against most decks you'll find at your kitchen table or lgs.

Why play The Ur-Dragon?

The answer to that question varies but for me it's because dragons are sweet and having access to all colors makes the deck adaptable. I've played this deck for years and it has changed a lot since I made my initial build. You can play control, superfriends, stompy or all of them at the same time. If that sounds good to you then stick around.

The Big Dumb

Part of what makes this deck fun for me is slamming big creatures like Utvara Hellkite, Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund, Balefire Dragon or even The Ur-Dragon and forcing a reaction from the rest of the table. Sometimes you even get a free cast of Progenitus from a Ur-dragon trigger or a Quicksilver Amulet and chaos ensues. Generally, this is the main focus of this version of the deck and is also the win condition in most cases. Play enough big dumb to kill people through combat damage.

Some of the most notable beaters include Atarka, World Render, Scourge of the Throne, Territorial Hellkite, Dromoka, the Eternal and sometimes Sunscorch Regent.

The Bin

Dragons have a tendency to end up in the bin because people don't appreciate getting beat up apparently. We will combat this by running cards like Journey to Eternity  , Patriarch's Bidding and Living Death. This becomes very powerful if you also have a haste enabler like Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund, Dragonlord Kolaghan, Dragon Tempest or Temur Ascendancy on the board. We also run some counterspells to protect us from board wipes but feel free to include cards like Teferi's Protection if you have a copy.

The Walkers

My playgroup plays lots of walkers for fun more than anything else and here is where you could change up the deck the most. I do reccomend playing cards like Sarkhan, Fireblood, Garruk, Caller of Beasts and Ugin, the Spirit Dragon if you have one.

The Part Everyone Loves, the Lands!

As you may have noticed, this deck is five colors, which comes with a five color mana base. Generally speaking this is the most expensive part of the deck for the least amount of fun gameplay it comes with, but is quite necessary for your overall enjoyment. You don't have to have expensive fetches but being able to play lands that don't enter tapped or that can fix your colors is key. If you're on a budget you can play cards like Terramorphic Expanse, slowfetches like Bad River and pain lands like Battlefield Forge. If you're not on a budget you can add original duals or more fetches if you like to shuffle your library every turn.

The Gameplay

Your early game resolves around ramping, for the most part. Sometimes you can cast early drops like Boneyard Scourge and Territorial Hellkite to keep the pressure high but your chances of winning are reduced quite significantly unless you can get to five mana quite fast to cast your 6-drops, which we have many of. Throughout the course of the game you will be the target of single target removal or board wipes so be wary of overextending unless you have protection spells in your hand. You oftenly will not be able to use The Ur-Dragon more than once or twice so make it count before the casting cost gets too high. You can however snap it back into play using Fist of Suns if that is the case.

I hope you enjoyed this quick overview of the deck and if you have any questions regarding card choices, feel free to comment down below.
