How to Train UR Dragon

Modern* Budget Control Tribal UR (Izzet)

cc270

I have one deck which is Uber Budget Aggro Illusion deck, but it lacks late-game power due to how spell-prone the creatures are (even with LotUr), and the strongest creature spell being 4cmc 5/5 with self-destruction upon being targeted. My second choice of deck is UW Jayce Mill FrayingSanity-Traumatise deck, but I sort of want to play with different colors.

I still really like the idea of control decks, so I was looking into decks that had Blue splashes but played mostly in the mid-late game. It made good sense for me; if I was going to play a lategame oriented deck, I would either need to control the field or ramp quickly.

The next thing I looked at was the card art (which was why I wanted to run UW Spirit at first) and I really liked the Dragon Tribe card art.

What I came up with seems relatively low budget, considering I don't play a whole lot and only do kitchen counter stuff with my friends every once in a while, but when I play tested it against the Illusions, it worked pretty well.

I did have 4 Slumbering Dragon but I noticed it wasn't really doing much so I decided to take it out and sub it for 2 Dragon Egg, 1 Dragonlord's Servant, and 1 Dragonmaster Outcast. I chose Hellkite Charger for a pseudo-wincon, and Tyrant of Valakut seemed like something pretty efficient with its surge effect. And I just like Icefall Regent.

As for non-creatures, I figured Dragon Tempest would be helpful since it allows me to do something about field control even when casting Dragon Egg, and I liked the synergy it displayed with Scourge of Valkas. I originally had Crucible of Fire but the +3/+3 didn't really seem all that relevant, since once dragons start to drop, it’s not difficult to hit hard even without it.

Probably the most card I'm ambivalent about is Izzet Charm, because while I understand the card is super versatile, I already have Silumgar's Scorn and Mana Leak for dispel, and Serum Visions for hand circulation (all of which are Blue and I was pretty blue abundant in terms of mana pool), and also Lightning Bolt and Draconic Roar if I wanted damage.

Fetch-and-shock is something I would look into in the future if I do decide to spend a little extra, but probably not at the moment.

I had to go on gatherer to find Dragon supports and I don't know a ton about staple cards, so if I missed anything important, please let me know!

EDIT 1; I realised I massively misread Awaken the Sky Tyrant. I might just do another Lightning Bolt or something in its stead.

EDIT 2; I took out Awaken the Sky Tyrant and Preordain because they were illegal in Modern.

EDIT 3; -2 Icefall Regent, -2 Tyrant of Valakut, -2 Izzet Charm, +3 Sprite Dragon, +1 Lathliss, Dragon Queen, +2 Magmatic Sinkhole.
