How to CounterBurn

Modern Burn Casual Counters

Atony1400

Sideboard

Maybeboard

This deck is built around countering and burning your opponen, leaving them with an open board. That allows you to attack as you please with two active Gods, and up to 3 Planeswalkers by your side.

This is my favorite deck. This deck requires you to be very resourceful with your spells, you need to save mana for the instants you cast on your opponents turn. I have won a few modern tournements with this deck, standard too (when this deck was legal), and I have had experts refine the list to its best possible state. Trust me when I say how fun it is to annoy your friends and opponents when you counter or burn everything they put down, besides their lands (sometimes I counter those too, ha, ha)

The list:

Goblin Electromancer and Guttersnipe to help you cast more spells, and burn your opponent every time you do so.

Chandra's Phoenix besides being my first ever magic card, it plays a good role in this deck. It helps you attack with a 2/2 Flyer with Haste, and with Ral Zerek's -2, Chandra, the Firebrand's +1, or a burn spell, you can return it from a graveyard to your hand. So if your opponent manages to kill it, it returns a turn later.

The Walkers; Jace, Architect of Thought, Chandra, the Firemind, and Ral Zarek to burn the way for your creatures, and give your opponents creatures a (slight) disadvantage. Also, Ral can make sure you always have the mana open for a little suprise the next time your opponent casts anything.

The Gods: Keranos, God of Storms, and Thassa, God of the Sea refine and reward you for your draws every turn.

The lands; nothing new, except I swapped out Izzet Guildgate for Swiftwater Cliffs, and a Temple of Epiphany, so I cam gain something when I play them tapped.

The spells are the normal counters and burns. I tried to include counters for every type of spell (which I think I did well).

The sideboard can transform the deck into a izzet guild deck, adds more counter or burn, or add more creatures to help you.

*The Legendary Creatures; Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius and Melek, Izzet Paragon. They help mow down opponents creatures, burn them with mana, allow you to copy instants and sourcery, and allow you to cast them right from the top of your library!

So, in short, this is a fun deck, and I hope you enjoy it!

Just a Note I make the majority of my decks with casual play in mind within my own playgroup. These decks are intended to be balanced within my own meta and fairly budget conscious, which may be why some obvious cards are excluded.

Attention!

I have been experimenting and talking with judges and experts over a Chandra, the Firebrand + Melek, Izzet Paragon infanate copy spell combo. If you discover a way that works, I'd really like to know how you do it. Thank you.

Check out my other modern builds!

I run a combination of three modern decks, the other two are;

Updates Add

Well, since the Theros block has left standard, and the prices have dropped, slightly, it's time to change a few things.

3 more Dissolves to replace 3 Cancels. I've been bugged over this, and decided now is the time to swap them. A free scry 1 is the reason for the change, because that's awesome!
