Deck update —Jan. 8, 2015

After playtesting and careful consideration, I am going to remove 2x Abzan Falconer and 2x Launch the Fleet in favor of 3x Brimaz, King of Oreskos and 1x additional Plains.

By the time Abzan Falconer becomes relevant, every Soldier should be big enough to bash through just about anything for the win.

Launch the Fleet is very situational. I was only running 2 to hopefully see it late game, but even then, the board state has to be just right to safely initiate an attack and receive the additional Soldier tokens. Brimaz, King of Oreskos is a more reliable way to get 1/1 Soldiers onto the field, which also will have Vigilance.

Adding 1x additional Plains is an attempt to reduce being mana screwed.

Comments and feedback are welcome, unless you think I should be running Preeminent Captain.

Hahaha, I appreciate that, but I am simply a torch which carries the light for all darkened souls. Enlightened though I am, my opinions can get the best of my word sometimes. Still, by studying the monad, I understand the archangel. Wisdom from the light is all I seek. Think of me as a Seeker of the Way, but have not yet Master the Way :). As it states, it is eternal and simply a path of cause and effect. Choose your roads carefully, there may not be a return.

@CrovaxTheCursed and @Somnus21: I've built a leaner, faster version: Durdle on Lands, Die to Soldiers. I believe it suffers from having little to no mid-to-late game presence. It's an all-or-nothing strategy; go balls-out and win, or die. It's tempting to play, but I hate it when I know my deck has faltered and has little to no chance of reaching stabilization. It becomes an auto-concede situation when it stalls. Heroic Soldiers of Urd - 2nd place @ FNM! doesn't feel that way to me. If it stalls, I can tread water until I draw into an answer.

Yeah, Nelstone, I had that trouble when trying to build one like that. Zero late game whatsoever, it would just fold if it couldn't aggro out quick enough. This deck here is the real deal, its later game is very scary and explosive.

One guy watching me at FNM commented "The deck kind of hangs around, and then it curb stomps you." That sums it up. If I get an optimal opening, it's a tidal wave. If not, and I can stabilize, it can become a tsunami.

You should try Cavalry Pegasus. Cheaper flying mechanic for all humans.

To quote myself from comment #11:

I'll break down why Cavalry Pegasus is not as good as Abzan Falconer:

  1. Pegasus is a 1/1 for . Falconer is a 2/3 for one more colorless.
  2. Although Pegasus can fly without needing a counter, it's way too fragile.
  3. Soldier tokens aren't human, and can't fly with Pegasus.
  4. With Obelisk of Urd out, the Falconer is a 4/5. The Pegasus is still a 1/1.
  5. In an extended game, the Falconer can Outlast.

hey what do you think about Archetype of Courage on the deck? like making a change -2 Hero of Iroas +2 Archetype of Courage . first strike is really good against Jeskai Charm + lifelink tokens, also against Hornet Queen , etc.

I got a question about your sideboard. Why do you put +2 Erase against abzan midrange? what do you want to destroy? they dont run enchantments except for Courser of Kruphix and we can easily overrun that guy.

Thank you, keep it up !

I add two Erase primarily to kill off Courser of Kruphix. It can be overrun, but it's presence can generate a lot of life, and I've found that to be problematic. I can see the argument against siding it in.

I like Archetype of Courage. It might be a good addition to the sideboard. In this build, having Hero of Iroas as a 4-off keeps overall casting costs down and turns Chosen by Heliod into a 1-drop. I think this makes the deck run better.

Thank you!

would you consider a few Battle Masterys? Maybe in sideboard? three drop for double strike could happen to be one of those many kill shots in this deck....

Battle Mastery might be a good sideboard card against U/W Heroic.

To expand on why I side in Erase to kill Courser of Kruphix, not only does it generate life but it provides card advantage. By playing a land off the top, it thins their deck and lets them get to answers faster. The Courser must die!

Whip of Erebos must die as well!!

Ok im convinced, now tell me something, when you play against whip decks like abzan whip, sidisi whip, g/b constellation, do you use your Erase on the early game to kill the Coursers and try to win fast before the whip hit the table or you save the Erase for Doomwake Giant and Whip of Erebos .

Btw I made 2nd place yesterday on my local store in a standard tournament with 24 people playing :D (with my own version that is basically the same but with the only change of +2 archetype of courage and -2 hero of iroas) I lost the finals against a sultai control deck. sultai charm on maindeck + thoughseize + kiora + coursers + removal + counters. after sideboard it gets even worse against that deck T_T. (I must say that I got mana screwed on my second game with only 2 mana all the game)

Still I was very happy with the deck result and everybody was pretty amazed seeing a monowhite on the final, we must keep tinkering with this deck :D. So far, no good cards for this deck in FRF right?
