Preamble

Hi there! Welcome to Hatchet Face, and the wonderful world of slivers. This deck was born out of a 60-card legacy slivers deck I had once upon a time that I built based on this article: Playing that deck is what really hooked me into magic, and at the time I worked at a card store so I could afford to splurge a little bit on fancy cards. Wanting to bring back that joy into my mtg games I've decided to build EDH slivers. So without further ado, I give you Hatchet Face.

I play with a casual group of people so having the fastest, most aggro build isn't absolutely necessary. That being said, I think I've got most of what one would want in here. Flavored like Meat Hooks, this deck looks to smash face as fast as possible. There's tons of win cons with slivers, but most of them are built around directly damaging your opponents.

Overall the main goals of this deck are to:

  • Bring out the same thrill of Meat Hooks
  • Not die out in the midgame
  • Sliver Hatchet to Opponents Face
A trip to my local card store to do some trade-ins brought me several things. The biggest change here is the addition of The First Sliver which also now serves as the commander for this deck. I've added a ton of creatures, most of which you'd expect. Notable adds are Metallic Mimic and Tempered Sliver as they've got excellent synergy with the biggest single card purchase of the day, Doubling Season. I also added Parallel Lives. I know I don't have Sliver Queen but it's really expensive right now thanks to Modern Horizons, but I do have Brood Sliver on board that works out pretty well later in the game.

I've added two sorcery cards, Hive Stirrings and Primal Surge. With Primal Surge on board and a deck that is mostly permanents, I've basically got my entire deck at my disposal for this cast. If you're at the point of playing Primal Surge it should set you up for at least a near-win in group games and a definite win in 1v1.

The biggest overall purchase was probably the lands. I think I'm pretty happy with the land base I've got going here. I know I could add Evolving Wilds and Terramorphic Expanse but figured I've got enough fetch in here as is.

Cards Added/Removed Show

I've always enjoyed tribal and theme decks, but as a more casual player among a group of more competitive, legacy-level players, I always struggled in sixty card formats. Eventually I managed to cobble together a reasonably good version of Meat Hooks after reading I had a great bit of fun but it's hard to justify that amount of money on cards and I was/am a student. So now, many years later I'm returning to magic after a long break to build some casual(ish) EDH decks and I'm starting with slivers. It's made from the cannibalized remains of my legacy slivers, and cards I've got lying around. Basically I hit about 80 cards and had to start adding in filler to get to a working 100.

You might notice that this deck is kind of heavy in Bant and you'd be right. That's because when adding filler I pulled things from a Bant tribal birds deck I'm also working on. The filler cards really make you rely on getting your slivers flying. Currently this is accomplished by drawing in to one of two flying slivers (Winged Sliver or Galerider Sliver) or tutoring for them with Sliver Overlord. If you can get yourself set up for this it's pretty fun and effective, but I'm certain I'll be removing most of these cards in the next coming trip to the card store. Though I might keep Aven Mindcensor simply because I like it.

General comments are always appreciated, as are card suggestions but I'm not looking to spend too much money on mtg in general so keep that loosely in mind.
