Harry961's Zur the Enchanter [Cycling]

Harry961

Hey guys, Harry961 here and today I am posting my own variant of Zur the Enchanter.

With Commander 2018 around the corner I thought id share my take on the cycling archetype with Zur. This started as a very budget $50 deck that I have upgraded as time has gone by. The more I play it, the more I want to upgrade it, then more I upgrade it the more I want to play it. Its a good cycle.

For those unfamiliar with the cycling archetype, the goal is to grab a Fluctator or New Perspectives to allow free (or almost free) cycling, then drain everybody out with a Faith of the Devoted or smash everyone with an army of 2/2 flying drakes generated by Drake Haven's the cycling triggers. Other payoffs include Astral Slide and Abandoned Sarcophagus.

I had a long break from this deck. Taking 10 minute turns where I could wiff was not particularly fun. This iteration of the deck cuts down on some of the more oppressive stax pieces that do not immediately end the game and works towards ending the game in a quicker fashion. If you're still looking for more lockouts, add in Perplexing Chimera and Approach of the Second Sun.

There is plenty of value in Ominous Seas and Drake Haven. After Astral Slide I would grab one of these two with Zur but do not grab the other unless you are looking to end the game quickly. Do not search for your Astral Drift either if you already have Slide on the field. The same goes for Fluctuator and New Perspectives. The reason for this is Farewell. Whilst Merciless Eviction was always a problem card for us, we could often protect core pieces in the graveyard but Farewell now just blows us out entirely. Go for longer value and use your redundancy and you can survive a farewell without countermagic and still come out on top.
