Maybeboard

I'm fairly new to Modern, so any help/comments about this deck are much appreciated! :)

This deck is designed to generate as much green mana as possible as soon as possible, attempting to get massive creatures like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn and Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, planeswalkers and the incredible Akroma's Memorial out in turn 3 or soon after.

The Ramp

Attaching as many Overgrowth and Utopia Sprawl as possible to one (maybe two to be safe) Forest, it may be tapped several times in one turn for huge amounts of green mana. With 4x Overgrowth and 4x Utopia Sprawl (choosing green) on one Forest, each tap will generate 13 green mana. Using all untapping abilities (4x Arbor Elf, etc.), a total of 143 green mana can be generated per turn using just this basic land.

However, well before this point, it becomes massively more beneficial to use my permanents to untap Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx instead, due to my huge devotion to green. In a perfect scenario with everything on my board (taping each land for mana as soon as it's untapped):

If we're in the pre-combat main phase, in the next combat I may attack with a Copperhorn Scout. This untaps all my creatures, allowing me to further untap and tap many more lands for mana in the post-combat main phase.

When Omnath, Locus of Mana is in play green mana doesn't go away as steps and phases end, so each turn all lands will tap to gain the maximum amount of green mana possible. It also gets a +1/+1 for each green mana in my pool; in playlists it has easily had power/toughnesses in the hundreds.

Also, if there's a possibility that the opponent can destroy lands, share the enchantments between two or three different forests. The mana ramp will be slightly lessened, but it isn't as bad as having a Forest with all 8 enchantments getting destroyed. If a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx is destroyed, there are still 3 more to be played.

The Surge

In this deck, Primal Surge is my only non-permanent card. I'm using two in case the first becomes countered. Playing this card places a massive amount of my deck onto the battlefield, frequently including hard-to-cast cards like Emrakul, the Aeons Torn, Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Akroma's Memorial.

With Akroma's Memorial in play, all creatures drawn out by Primal Surge now have amazing new keywords including haste, allowing them to attack straight away or tap to untap more lands.

In this deck, Primal Surge can often be cast on turns 3 or 4.

Other Strategies

  • Drawing cards is quite easy using Eidolon of Blossoms, since I'm playing a large amount of enchantments and enchantment creatures.

  • Courser of Kruphix adds a bit of life gain into my deck, and it also allows me an extra chance at playing a land if my hand has none.

  • Laboratory Maniac? A blue card?? He's in here to prevent losing from drawing from an empty library and turning it into an easy win. Having only two non-permanent cards means I'll burn through my deck very fast if I play Primal Surge. I can get him out in two ways: as part of the Surge or choosing blue on a Utopia Sprawl in case he gets into my hand.
