Great Bad Choices: Unblockable EDH

Commander / EDH* Casual Mono-Blue Theme/Gimmick Weenie

Tetsuko Umezawa, an interesting ninja girl with some hidden potential.

The second this card was spoiled, I started brewing. At first I was hesitant to start, because Edric, Spymaster of Trest exists, and that's a deck themed around unblockable boys.

Then I did this; I went on scryfall, advanced search... blue creatures, oracle text of "combat damage". I found a host of bizarre cards with a strangely high power level when coupled with Tetsuko. So, here's my unconventional brew that I've been working on for a while.

You don't care about winning, but rather fussing with the board.

You like unconventional decks that go against the norm (i.e Edgar Markov, Meren of Clan Nel Toth.

You like creatures, and you like winning with creatures.

You like noncreature effects on creatures.

You like spontaneous and improvised gameplay where every game is different and unpredictable.

You hate creatures.

You like to spike combo out and win ASAP.

You prefer consistent gameplay where you know your plan every game instead of improvising one.

It's really simple. You ramp, play tetsuko, play some weenies and then pummel your opponent.

Some really important cards are the one's that mess with permanents; Cephalid Constable being my favorite. If you read him carefully, he bounces permanents, this includes lands, based on how much damage he does. If you do 5 damage, you bounce 5 anythings that YOU CHOOSE. So if you slap a Loxodon Warhammer on him, you're bouncing 4 things, gaining life, and doing damage. Now what if you hooked him up with a Fireshrieker...

There's no mill cards, like Startled Awake  . I put "mill" with Raven Guild Master and Scalpelexis, which exile instead of milling. This is great value as exiling prevents graveyard stuff and it's just completely gone from the game. Rootwater Thief also just hoses combo by exiling the best card in their deck whenever he hits.

The morph cards I put in here are really valuable to have: Willbender, Voidmage Apprentice, even the Raven Guild Master. Although it may seem more mana intensive to flip over the raven boy, it's safer, since they can't counter a card that's flipped over. They can still remove it, though.

The morph cards are fun because your opponent has no idea what they are (unless you ninjutsu Voidmage Apprentice with Mistblade Shinobi, which is a dirty play).

The deck's biggest weakness is board wipes, and ways to "recover" are Evacuation and Devastation Tide, which have the upside of bouncing your opponent's stuff. The deck also has a ton of card draw to get you extra guys after the board blows up. Another weakness is that I run pretty much no tutors, as they're hard to come by in blue, and even harder regarding creatures.

Quietus Spike and Scytheclaw don't win the game, but they're a big problem for your opponent after a couple of turns, and can help win pretty darn fast.

Like I mentioned, cards like Scroll Thief are essential. Getting that card draw keeps your gas coming and gets you damage all the time.

Stolen Identity is busted. I played against edgar once and hooked it on a boy with Fireshrieker and got two clones of Throne of the God-Pharaoh. It's fun to deal 18 to everyone at your end step with 6 copies of the throne and only 3 boyos.

Any of the bouncey cards are great, as they are pseudo removal. Sigil of Sleep, Cephalid Constable, Mistblade Shinobi, Soul Seizer  , to name a few.

Let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm thinking about cutting Civilized Scholar   for Ovalchase Dragster, but I just love the flavor on the scholar too much to cut him. Thanks for any and all feedback.

Godspeed,

SpookyToe
