***IMPORTANT***

This deck is made specifically for a format at my local card shop where it's the same as regular EDH but every card over $2 (according to the lowest TCGPlayer median price) is banned aside from the general who is allowed to be up to $5.

If you're not interested in playing in this format, use this deck as a skeleton to find some really good, fun, and cheap cards to throw into your deck and improve it with more expensive cards that do a better job.

***IMPORTANT***

HUGE shoutout to Squirrel_of_War's Jarad, Extreme Sub $40 Budget EDH deck! This deck borrows heavily from that deck and doesn't have the $2 restriction that this deck has. So if you're not building specifically for <$2 format but still want an amazing budget deck, I suggest you go check that deck out as well!

Let's get to the nitty-gritty: How does this deck work? There are a few win-cons for this deck, so here are the main 3:

1) Commander Damage: This is a commander deck after all and we have a commander that can get pretty big pretty fast. Bestow Nighthowler on him or equip Bonehoard to him and use Rogue's Passage on him after a little self-mill and you can swing for lethal in just one blow.

2) Combat/Direct Damage: This one's pretty much a given, but with all the high power creatures you can just try and swing in for huge amounts of damage before sacrificing the creatures to Jarad to essentially do double damage!

3) Mortal Combat : This card is a bit experimental, but thought I'd give it a try. It fits the theme of the deck and I'm working on replacing more sorceries/instants/enchantments with creatures to try and activate this easier. Currently the easiest way to activate it is with Mortality Shift, which is also a super experimental card.

Pros:

+Can win through commander damage, combat damage, or direct damage

+Graveyard strategies allow for quick reactions to the board through recursion

+Black ensures no shortage of removal and card advantage

+Green gives plenty of land-ramp and beefy creatures for Jarad to sac

Cons:

-Graveyard hate cards like Bojuka Bog and Tormod's Crypt are under $2 (in format) and there are plenty of others out of format

Hey all, I've got some grim news about this deck. Thanks to the card prices rising, most of what I wanted to do with this deck; I just can't anymore.

With notable losses like Phyrexian Devourer, Nim Deathmantle, Hermit Druid, Mindslicer, Crypt Ghast, Dictate of Erebos, Deadbridge Chant, and Buried Alive; it's a lot harder to try and win with this deck anymore. A lot of the "soul" of the deck still remains, but a lot of the cards that were lost were very important to either stabilizing or winning the game.

Not to mention that there are so many other good cards in the $2-$5 range that this deck would love, like Living Death, Golgari Grave-Troll, Lightning Greaves, Phyrexian Arena, Necromancy, Eternal Witness, and Traverse the Ulvenwald are all cards that barely didn't get a chance to make it into this deck.

That isn't even touching on the multiple amazing cards that are over $5, such as Reanimate, Lord of Extinction, Life from the Loam, Greater Good, Grave Pact, Sheoldred, Whispering One, and all of the good lands would just make this deck so much better than it is now (duh).

All that ranting was basically me trying to say that this deck by far has been gutted pretty badly due to price spikes in cards that were in the deck. My other decks have lost cards here and there too, but usually the cards that are lost are minimal or have slightly less efficient counterparts. This deck lost a win condition (Phyrexian Devourer), 3 amazing ways to self-mill (Buried Alive, Hermit Druid, and Deadbridge Chant), ramp (Crypt Ghast), a good recursion piece Nim Deathmantle, and two pieces of incredibly efficient removal (Dictate of Erebos and Mindslicer). Some of those cards I have been able to find okay replacements for (like swapping out Dictate of Erebos for Butcher of Malakir), but the power level of the deck has dropped significantly.

So I'm basically down to 4 options at this point: 1) Keep doing what I've been doing and try and make Jarad work in 2DH with minor tweaks here and there. 2) Remodel the deck entirely with new win conditions or maybe even a new commander; but keep it 2DH. 3) Upgrade the deck and make it normal EDH. 4) Scrap the deck entirely.

Number 4 might sound a little drastic but I really only want to sink money into a commander that I really love, and I don't know if I really love Jarad as a commander. I also don't like taking half-measures, so I wouldn't want to just add in the cards that I originally had that went over $2; I'd want to also buy the other cards I mentioned too.

Anyways, there's my rant. I wanted to make sure that ya'll knew what was going on and maybe why this deck hasn't gotten a lot of attention lately or why it seems so weak with so many upvotes. I'm doing my best to try and salvage the deck, but I think I'm either going to have to streamline it hardcore or get really creative.
