"There are many kinds of duty, and mine is to see our world grow and endure." -- Paradise Druid

As of standard sets a few years back, Golgari is where Elves tends to end up. We had to wait a while on Arena for that to be the case, but now the black/Golgari cards offer some real bite to go along with standard 'elf shenanigans'.

The strong Jumpstart decks further boosted Elves closer to where it is in other formats. Though it's still a little shy power wise, it makes up for that in Gladiator with flavour, synergy and all-round fun gameplay in general!

OUT
Goose of Paradise
Swarm Guildmage

IN
Elvish Mystic
Shaman of the Pack

Fond farewell to Goose the honorary-elf who makes way for Elvish Mystic, despite the Goose just being a better card on paper, the deck now has enough Elf synergies that having a one-drop elf probably just matters more at all stages of the game (generating more mana early, triggering abilities later).

Shaman of the Pack is one of my long time favourites that I play in paper Commander elves, one of the cards in standard that initially heralded the shift or at least my changing personal preference from mono-G to GB elves. This card wins games - whether it's doming them for lethal or simply setting up an alpha flunge and inevitable victory. Swarm Guildmage has been on the cutting block for some time, but retained for flavour reasons. On paper it should end games itself, it should be good in the kind of board stalls that elves often faces. The thing is I think I have activated its abilities maybe twice in a hundred matches (not that I've cast it every match), so they are probably just slightly over-costed. If it had just been a 2/3 it would have a fighting chance. Hate to cut Golgari cards but maybe they will return later down the line.
