Commander: General Kreat, the Boltbringer

Sideboard

Literally the first Commander/EDH deck I've ever built. I feel it necessary to mention this is a physical paper deck, not digital. Not necessarily trying to be tournament quality, just trying to beat my friends, but constructive tips/advice on how to make the deck stronger are always appreciated. Yes, I know I need to run more interaction/removal.

This deck is a 7. But, no, jokes aside... The deck is, by definition, a bracket 4, but as implied power level goes, plays closer to a bracket 3. DeckCheck rates its current power level at 6.5-7.0 out of 10.

Commander Choices. I've noticed, over time, that this deck functions differently, depending on who I decide to run as the commander. With Krenko, Mob Boss as the commander, the deck functions more as a swarm deck with a swing wide approach to winning, with damage from Impact Tremors and General Kreat, the Boltbringer being added bonuses, if they even see play. But if you swap it around so that General Kreat is the commander and Krenko is just one of the 99, then, with all the ways to get absurd amounts of goblins onto the battlefield, the deck takes on more of a group slug approach via noncombat damage that hits every opponent at once. On a personal note, I tend to leave General Kreat as the commander, just to differentiate the deck from my other GW tokens deck.

Notable Exclusions. Occasionally, certain cards are deliberately left out of the deck as a matter of personal preference. I will do my best to explain why here.

  • Rundvelt Hordemaster: My decision to not include Rundvelt stems largely from the fact that its ability having you exile the top card of your library is not optional. I sacrifice far too many goblin tokens to Skirk Prospector and/or Goblin Chirurgeon to risk losing that many necessary cards to it not being the right time to cast them in that moment.

Misc. Additional Notes

  • Canadian Highlander Legality. While I have never played the format, to know exactly how strong the deck would or wouldn’t be, this decklist (minus the sideboard) is also legal in Canadian Highlander format, currently with 4 points’ worth of cards.
  • Planechase option. I maintain a 10-card planar deck specifically for this deck. The deck list may be viewed below:
  • Vanguard option. I also have a copy of the Vanguard card Squee (which I am currently having trouble linking, here, for some reason) in case I ever somehow find myself with the option to play some kind of variation of Vanguard format using Commander format decks.
