Version 5.0: An Overhaul of Hulking Proportions —Oct. 28, 2017

This update is long overdue. I've streamlined the deck further and, more importantly, incorporated the now "unbanned" Protean Hulk.

-Vish Kal, Blood Arbiter: I do not actually need most of those abilities and can go with a cheaper sac outlet.

-Angel of Despair: Back out again. I sometimes used this to destroy my own creatures, but now I have more sac outlets. Could potentially go back in.

-Liliana, Heretical Healer: Too slow.

-Entomb: Wasn't getting much out of this.

-Nighthowler: Killing someone with Commander combat damage was a fun idea, but it's time to trim this.

-Ghoultree: Removing midrange grindy stuff in favor of broken combo stuff.

-Spider Spawning: This card is excellent on defense, but if I am filling my graveyard up so much, I should try to just win.

-Gnaw to the Bone: Lifegain schmifegain.

-Splendid Reclamation: Never really got this working and it seems too slow. Fun idea, but the deck moved a different direction.

-Spore Frog: Defense is for people who don't just murder everyone.

-Miren, the Moaning Well: Very infrequently used for its ability. Replaced for now. Considering this one.

-Maze of Ith: Again, Bothering with defense is for some other deck.

-Thespian's Stage: Really needed Bazaar of Baghdad or Dark Depths to work. Not worth it.

-Vesuva: Even less worth it than Thespian's Stage.

-Dark Depths: a 20/20 that can be chump-blocked by any flyer is just not what this deck is going for.

-Wurmcoil Engine: While the power is obvious, this is still midrange stuff, which I'm now eschewing.

+Viscera Seer: Good one-drop sac outlet.

+Apprentice Necromancer: Should probably have left this in the whole time. Oops.

+Wall of Roots: Solid card. Possible infinite mana in sac loops.

+Massacre Wurm: Gets rid of pesky creatures.

+Nantuko Husk: Phyrexian Ghoul #2.

+Body Snatcher: Used to grab a combo component for a sac loop out of my hand. Might prove unnecessary. We'll see.

+Mindslicer: Anti-hate card.

+Tidehollow Sculler: Targeted anti-hate card.

+Reclamation Sage: How was I not already using this?

+Diabolic Intent: This is better than Entomb in my deck and arguably better than Demonic Tutor.

+Ramunap Excavator: A Crucible that I can cast from my graveyard with Karador? Yes please.

+Fiend Hunter: In some cases, it could be used on an oppnent's card. Mostly used in sac loops.

+Academy Rector: Fetches Pattern of Rebirth for sac loops.

+Pattern of Rebirth: Used with Boonweaver Giant sac loops.

+Boonweaver Giant: This thing is bonkers.

+Protean Hulk: Unbanned in the the "official" official rules. This is huge.

Yeah my Karador is more about blowing up the board with a lot of creatures that give me lands for ramp.

Seems like False Prophet would be counter productive in a reanimation deck. I like mostly whats going on with this deck, but it seems to me there a few redundancies that can be worked out to make more bang for the buck. In my experience with graveyard decks, they are always lacking precious space and loading up with too many similar effects will lower the impact of the deck.

Love the deck - I just started playing Karador is a commander perhaps you can take a look at mine and see whats up over there - i would greatly appreciate it. I used to play recurring survival in the early 2000's in vintage, and this deck seems to play the most similar in the EDH format. Im so glad i chose this over meren

"Seems like False Prophet would be counter productive in a reanimation deck."

False Prophet is reliant on sacrifice outlets, which is a big part of why I've increased the count on those. If the board is getting out of control, I drop False Prophet, sacrifice all of my own creatures to the outlet, sacrifice False Prophet to the outlet and, with False Prophet's trigger on the stack, sacrifice the outlet to itself. All of my creatures end up safely in my graveyard (except tokens) and other creatures are exiled. Not the most efficient board clear ever, but it is nice to have in this deck.

"I like mostly whats going on with this deck, but it seems to me there a few redundancies that can be worked out to make more bang for the buck. Well, I've been gradually refining my list for over two years. It's gotten pretty close to what I wanted, although of course it isn't perfect. There's a threshold of redundancy I need for certain things if this deck is to function properly. I need enough ways to bin cards that I can get a dredge loop going. I need enough dredgers to go off, I need enough protection effects to fight through obstacles, I need enough win conditions to find one and set it up quickly, and so on.

It's worth noting, as I've alluded to in the past, that my deck is a bit of an oddball. I didn't set out to build a Karador deck or even an Abzan deck. I just wanted a full-throttle dredge-based Commander deck. Exploring my options led me to conclude, at the time, that Karador had the most to offer such a deck as a commander. And at the time, that was true. Since then, two other options have come along that are probably better: Sidisi, Brood Tyrant and The Gitrog Monster. But for now, I'm sticking with what I've been building on. My list seems weird because it's focused on the principle of dredging cards as much and as soon as possible in order to build its graveyard into a formidable weapon. I do not contend that this is the optimal approach for Karador. A more combo-packed, reanimator deck would probably be more practical. However, I also think that if one is trying of a practical Abzan Commander deck that kills using graveyard-based combos, it's probable that Ghave, Guru of Spores is the more practical commander. It's just that Karador is so cool.

"Love the deck - I just started playing Karador is a commander perhaps you can take a look at mine and see whats up over there - i would greatly appreciate it."

Will do.

"I used to play recurring survival in the early 2000's in vintage, and this deck seems to play the most similar in the EDH format. Im so glad i chose this over meren"

Probably not feasible to capture the experience of a classic RecSur deck in this format, but one could come reasonably close. Karador seems like a good fit for such a deck, although that does mean forgoing red cards...

Still haven't really made any changes to the mainboard, but I'm gearing up to get this deck closer to its final incarnation (no immediate plans to take it apart, but I want to get going on building different Commander decks). My plan is to replace things that don't speed the deck up or form game-winning combos with a focused anti-hate package. I want to be able to win through cards like Necrogen Spellbomb, Bojuka Bog, and Stonecloaker.

I would definitely suggest Hermit Druid as a very powerful way to mill yourself. The only downside is that that card will sometimes draw a lot of hate, because of how powerful it is.

Hermit Druid is one of those ut oh if i dont kill it we all gonna die cards. Of course depending on the number of basic lands you run, it could totally whiff, but it usually hits something pretty decent.

I'm a bit surprised to see Hermit Druid included in so many Commander decks. Eventually, I'll build my own Scion of the Ur-Dragon with the infamous Hermit Druid combo, just because I can and because the deck is amazing to see in action. But from the perspective of people who actually like to play the game, I'd think that Hermit Druid would be some pretty blatant bad mojo and certainly more broken than half the stuff on the "official banned list." When it comes down to it, I could use Hermit Druid as a "dredge-until-I-hit-a-basic" card in a Karador deck, or I could just put in its own deck and kill everyone on turn three.

yeah but thats the thing, you dont have to use hermit druid as a game ender, hes also a great enabler. in the end it all depends on how you use him, if you run infinite loops, thats on the player, or you can simply use it to help you get started.

Yeah, but I could also use Black Lotus to cast Gray Ogre.
