Ghave, Guru of Spores: The Culmination of a Lifelong Obsession with Saprolings

**

So I'm going to write this like the infernal Recipe websites on the interwebz that take you on a journey to evoke emotion and pathos and whatnot and everyone scrolls past it anyway haha.

I first tasted Magic the Gathering fandom on the briny shores of Alpha, Beta and Unlimited back in the grand ol' year of 1995. I entered Highschool spending my allowance on Ice Age packs. Lord of Tresserhorn was my best card. I would cobble together gigantic 200 card decks made of grixis before Lord of Tresserhorn colors had a nom-de-plum and would fight my friend who had made a Bant deck while his younger brother favored Gruul, again all before such labels ever existed. We had no idea about synergies or combos or any of that. We audibly gasped when we discovered Icy Manipulator and Royal Assassin worked in tandem.

I gave up magic for, brace yourself as I dust myself off, a one-times CD writer. That's right I sold my collection the moment the drive became obtainable for me, because I wanted to spend more money on pre-Neo, pre-Columbine, The Crow and Johnny the Homicidal Maniac-inspired pleather jackets instead of my over-the-top lust for CDs and new music. It was 1998, MP3s were just becoming a thing and this was the only way to offset such an addiction.

When I went to college in 1999 I realized nerds weren't just supposed to feel bad about liking d&d or mtg and found like-minded individuals and began collecting anew. Amid the Invasion set, Saprolings were a thing again. My first, non-wtf am I doin' deck theme, ever, was Saprolings. As such, I've always had a soft, mushy, fungusy spot for them in my heart.

This is geared for 1v1 Commander simply because it has Primeval Titan in it. When I play multiplayer we agree ahead of time to consider it either a proxy for Sensei's Divining Top (banned in 1v1) or Solemn Simulacrum.

It has a decided Saproling theme with a Johnny flair. The main theme shares the spotlight nearly equally with +1/+1 Counters (including proliferate) but there are subthemes of sacrificing creatures, and an over-abundance of enchantments.

I eventually wish to get an Earthcraft, so, in conjunction with Cathars' Crusade, you can pay 1, pop out a Sap from Ghave, the Crusade triggers and replenishes Ghave so he's back to 5/5 or w/e, and then you can activate the Earthcraft despite that Sap havin' summonign sickness, and then untap the land you used to start this process and do it again. You'll get infinite tapped saps. As of the writing of this, I have Ravnica Shockland duals en route from a card order.
