Commander / EDH Aggro Casual Control Elves Faeries GU (Simic)

NV_1980

Welcome to Flutter, ... Flutter, ... BAMN BAMN !

You are looking at a Simic, weenie acceleration deck. Its commander, Edric, Spymaster of Trest, is a 2/2 legendary elf rogue with 'Whenever a creature deals combat damage to one of your opponents, its controller may draw a card.’.

A great way to survive and win in multi-player games, is by keeping our opponents from directing their full attention on us, until it’s too late. Edric, Spymaster of Trest is a great tool for that. Especially during the early phases of games, he makes attacking others much more interesting than attacking him. Should this distraction succeed, a hard-to-block force under Edric's command soon gains such incredible momentum, that it becomes virtually impossible for any other deck to keep up with it.

Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes

We greatly appreciate feedback to any of our decks, including this one. Before you give any however, please take note of the following:

  1. Having fun at MTG, is more important to us than winning games. We want our opponents to have a fun time playing against us too. That makes it more likely people will want to play against us again. This attitude is reflected in the way in which we build decks. They do not need to be invincible; not even competitive. We are ok with decks containing infinite combos though, as they can produce some hilarious results. So well done if you can pull one off; especially if it is original.
  2. We no longer buy cards, but in cases that we feel a card really adds to our collection, we still trade them. This means that whenever you are suggesting a card we do not own, chances are slim it is going to end up in our deck. Please do not take this personally. Also, please do not let this stop you from making suggestions. Suggestions that do not make it into this deck, will still be mentioned on this page and might be used by others.
  3. Please do not forget to include the card(s) you would remove to make room for your recommended card(s).
  4. Please do not recommend any cards with infect or cards whose sole purpose is to destroy basic lands (non-basic lands are fair game). Our playgroup has banned them.

With that being said, thank you for all your support and if you should decide to use our ideas, have lots of fun with them.

During the early stages of a game we want to convince the opposition that engaging us (in any way) is a bad idea. We can do that in "the easy way", as well as the "hard way":

  • "The easy way" involves getting Edric on the field early, and give others an incentive to attack players other than ourselves;
  • "The hard way" involves countering spells that prove detrimental to our mid- and end game (specific targets would be (s)tax spells, board wipes and spells that prevent of us from utilizing Edric's ability).

While we are doing these things, we want to start building up an army of unblockable/hard-to-block creatures quickly and attacking often. Now you might think this will focus attention of our opposition right back to us, but this does not have to be the case for a few reasons. First, the creatures we use to attack our opposition aren’t particularly strong; especially not in the early phases of a game (definitely not juicy enough for point-removal spells). Second, we can spread out attacks over multiple opponents, damaging each a little bit, thereby not gaining the ire of opponents eager for revenge.

Aside from Edric's ability, this deck contains several ways to accelerate the build-up of forces. Cheap-to-cast mana dorks, cards like Burgeoning, Exploration, Druids' Repository, Nature's Will and Sword of Feast and Famine can speed things up nicely. We’ve also added more card draw opportunities like Bident of Thassa, Looter il-Kor or Rhystic Study.

Once we have a force between 5-10 creatures, (which can be accomplished within a few turns if mana is managed correctly), we can start looking at ways to zap one or more opponents off the field. The deck contains several ways to do that. The most obvious ones are Beastmaster Ascension and Craterhoof Behemoth; instantly boost all our creatures with enough power to deal some serious damage. A combination of turn-gaining spells (like Time Warp, Time Stretch and Walk the Aeons) can also prove devastating as we can pile attack, upon attack on our foes.
