Five Color Good Boys (Dog Tribal)

Commander / EDH Casual Five Color Theme/Gimmick Tribal

Selerom

Five color dog tribal. All creatures are dogs except for the commander, and all five colors are represented in the dogs.

This is meant to be a casual EDH deck. I’m interested in improvements, but this deck is meant to be played against either new EDH players or other janky-fun decks.

Tribal Synergy

Dogs don't have a lot of natural tribal synergy baked in, so this deck relies on a package of pretty generic tribal support cards. Vanquisher's Banner, Door of Destinies, and Coat of Arms compensate for a lack of lords, while there's the cute interaction between Herald's Horn, Descendants' Path, and Icon of Ancestry to give a kind of card draw and card selection engine on your upkeep.

Anthems & +1/+1 Counters

Looking at the abilities on dogs, it was pretty clear that dog tribal was going to have to be combat-focused. Because a few of the dogs generate +1/+1 counters, I decided to lean into that theme with spells like Cathars' Crusade. Mirari's Wake gives an added boost with an anthem effect and ramp.

Commander

When it came to picking a commander, I really wanted dogs in all five colors, and there are no 5-color legendary dogs. Ultimately, I went with Kenrith, the Returned King because his two cheapest activated abilities synergize with the combat focus of the deck, giving haste and even more +1/+1 counters. Also, even though his activated abilities make him 5-color, he only requires white to cast. Since my most prevalent colors are white and green, I liked that I could bring him online with only white to get him on the battlefield and green to use his most important ability.

It's worth noting that Training Grounds is here mostly to squeeze extra value out of Kenrith.

Lands & Ramp

Seeing as how dog tribal is never going to be a super competitive or optimized deck, I decided to build the mana base on the theme of "lands that I happen to own." Luckily I happened to have a set of shocks from GRN/RNA drafts and sundry cracked packs, which I could round out with a few picks from the C19 pre-cons as well as some spare copies of EDH staples I had on hand.

For ramp, I went with the a few of the usual suspects of mana rocks along with spells like Farseek, Nature's Lore, and Skyshroud Claim that let me search for the shocklands. Because it's a creature-focused deck, Cryptolith Rite and Growing Rites of Itlimoc   also seemed like solid inclusions.
