A Marchesa, The Black Rose edh

"Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble"

Manipulate, Steal, back stab, and dethrone. All part of a day’s work when your one of the Nobles vying for control of the High City of Paliano. When I first laid eyes upon the majestic beauty of Marchesa, the Black Rose I knew that I wanted to build a commander deck around her. She seemed like she would be a lot of fun with the ability to recur value creatures while also being outright aggressive.

Power Play

Blood Magic:

One of the most important things to remember when playing Marchesa is that your life total needs to be on par or lower than the highest life total at the table for Dethrone to be useful. After all it’s hard to dethrone someone when you’re the one sitting on the throne.

Phyrexian Scriptures

Leylines:

Our mana makes up the most abundant of our pain inflicting cards.

Ancient Tomb, City of Brass, Mana Confluence, Tarnished Citadel, Shivan Reef, Underground River, War Room, Hall of the Bandit Lord

Treasury:

Some treasures are worth a little blood.

Talisman of Creativity, Talisman of Dominance, Talisman of Indulgence

Blood Rituals:

These cards help us control the board and our life total.

Unspeakable Symbol, Phyrexian Reclamation, Fire Covenant, Lim-Dul's Vault,

The entire point of this deck is to sacrifice our creatures and recur them at the next end step. Gathering ever increasing value.

Sengir Autocrat

Subjects:

These are the cards that make the deck. We want to recur these subjects to wring as much value from them as possible.

Baleful Strix, Dockside Extortionist, Imperial Recruiter, Massacre Girl, Mulldrifter, Plaguecrafter, Zealous Conscripts, River Kelpie, Solemn Simulacrum

The Butchers:

Its a bloody job but someone's got to do it.

Grimgrin, Corpse-Born, Carrion Feeder, Yahenni, Undying Partisan, Yawgmoth, Thran Physician, Goblin Bombardment, Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar, Woe Strider, Viscera Seer.

Death Priests:

Not only do we get value from our subjects returning from the dead but we get value from the simple act of their deaths.

Juri, Master of the Revue, Grim Haruspex, Midnight Reaper, Wurmcoil Engine, Liliana, Dreadhorde General, Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos, Syr Konrad, the Grim

Win conditions:

enter image description here

Flayer of the Hatebound: This guy has to do nothing but sit on the board. Let marchesa and your sac outlets do the rest. Burn baby burn!

Drana, Liberator of Malakir: While not technically a win condition I feel like this card should get an honorable mention. Drana lives by the saying of "walk softly and carry a big stick". When she hits the board and your opponent’s don’t have an immediate answer to her they are on a very short clock. Her ability to buff your creatures after dethrone triggers than continuing to add counters after your opponents are halfway dead make you rush so far ahead its ridicules.

Mikaeus, the Unhallowed + Murderous Redcap : Essentially Redcap is the Tommy-gun that Mikaeus carry's around with him. Once you have a sacrifice outlet you can kill Redcap an infinite amount of times killing anything and everything two damage at a time.

Marchesa, the Black Rose is a very political commander who forces your opponents to play tactfully or be punished for their insolence. As I stated before this list while not the most competitive out there it is the one I personally have found to be the most entertaining to play.

Happy draws!
