Bitter Sorin - BW Tokens

SCORE: 2 | 605 VIEWS

While I realize the Monastery Mentor + Snapcaster Mage combo is the common way to do Esper tokens, that deck is very much a control deck. Blue control just isn't my style. I do, however, love the power that comes with Bitterblossom + Intangible Virtue + Sorin, Solemn Visitor . My goal is try to land these three pieces. Thankfully the addition of helps to draw more useful spells. It also provides the end game surprise of Dragonlord Ojutai .

I will update a list of sideboard strategies as I think of and test them. Assuming I remember to record what I do at events.

Updates Add

Round 1: BU Mill
Won 2-0. Turn 1 Archive Trap was a fun surprise game 1 and annoying when repeated game 2.
Round 2: Merfolk
Won 2-1 (L-W-W). Timely Reinforcements and Engineered Explosives definitely earned their keep. Especially with Timely Reinforcements off the -3 ability of Jace, Telepath Unbound  Flip
Opponent had me on UB Faeries after game one. I like that depending on the draw I can really confuse opponents as to what I'm playing
Match up makes me really want a wrath affect in the sideboard to help against creature decks
Round 3: Infect
Loss 1-2 (L-W-L). Game one went fast as to be expected of Infect. Game two I had dual Inquisition of Kozilek and a Path to Exile taking his Glistner Elf and Blighted Agent then killing his Spellskite and he never got to another creature. Game 3 he got a Blighted Agent out and I never drew removal.
Round 4: Kiki Chord
Won 2-0. While Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip allowed me to curve out perfectly, I don't think this was a good test of the match up since opponent was land flooded both games. Opponent also was not on the Nahiri version of the deck.
Round 5: Affinity
Affinity was the only 4-0 at round start
Won 2-0. I love playing against affinity. I believe I am heavily favored in the match up given the decks ability to produce large numbers of 1 power fliers.

With a 1st place finish with a record of 4-1, I am quite happy with my first run of the deck. I feel like the addition of to the deck was worth it. While Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip and Serum Visions greatly help to make the deck more consistent at drawing threats and ensuring to hit land drops without getting flooded. That thing that is good at.

Narset Transcendent was intended for being extra card draw as well as a fun combo with Lingering Souls. If you flashback Lingering Souls with Narset's -2, you can stack the flashback trigger and rebound trigger so the rebound happens first. So when the flashback trigger looks to exile the card, it is already in exile. Then you get a free cast on your next turn thanks to rebound. You can keep this loop going so long as you can use Narset's -2. While this is a fun gimmic, I actually sided out Narset Transcendent in every matchup. I feel like she is better served as a sideboard card over Notion Thief

While I also took Dragonlord Ojutai out each match. I still like having him in the main deck as a good closer that opponents will never expect out of a token deck.

With Narset Transcendent being relegated to the sideboard. I think I will be replacing her with one of the Timely Reinforcements(M12) from the sideboard. That card has definitely earned its keep for me in the past with my original BW deck Bitter Sorin - BW Tokens.

Now that Timely Reinforcements(M12) has gone to the main, I have room to add a Supreme Verdict to give the deck the wrath effect it needs against creature decks.

One last change I am considering is replacing both Relic of Progenitus with Rest in Peace like the BW version used. I realize this can be counter productive with Lingering Souls and Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  Flip but the ability to completely shut off graveyard decks has always been worth the hit I take in doing so. While these two cards are hindered, the deck still has plenty of power in Bitterblossom, Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, and Sorin, Solemn Visitor
