Gruul Hydras

Modern RG (Gruul)

Sideboard

Original idea came from Saffron Olives apoc hydra deck

3 things i love in this Game, Jank, Wurms, and Hydras. I haven't seen Hydras be relevant at a tournament scene, so this is my attempt. It has won Top 8 every time I have entered. ( I changed a couple cards October 28, 2019) we will see how it does.

Arbor Elf- Love this guy

Utopia Sprawl- You cant have arbor elf in a deck and not have the whole package. Do not attach Utopia Sprawl to a non basic if possible, or you might just screw yourself right along with the opponent, when you play Blood Moon

Rosheen Meanderer- Fell in love with this card the second i seen it, so much potential

Unbound Flourishing- Double Hydras Casting cost, which then they double again because of their abilities, Spells get countered.. Thats ok this doubles up the spells, also works with Kessig Wolf Run

Apocalypse Hydra- Ability to be massive, & built in removal

Primordial Hydra- Passive ability to get bigger, decoy for removal, & Trample

Voracious Hydra- Ability to be massive, has built in removal, & Trample

Walking Ballista- Built in removal, wish the add counter ability was xx instead of 4

Red Sun's Zenith- Exile, reshuffles library, and you need less because it is reusable. Nothing like exiling those graveyard decks. Just pay attention people constantly put creatures in the graveyard after you kill the creature. It is suppose to be exiled

Commune with Lava- It is a good hail-mary on opponents end step. Allows you to dig thru your library so to speak. Works well with Unbound Flourishing

Fling- If you cast a Hydra and have Fling in hand, leave 2 mana open just in case of removal. It is inevitable, people will remove your shit, and this combo has saved me more times than I like to admit. Works with newley added Fatal Frenzy

Fatal Frenzy- Similar to Kessig Wolf Run, can also be done as a combat trick. Tap kessig for buff, then cast Fatal Frenzy for a ridiculous amount of power and attack, or simply Fling

Lightning Bolt- ... It's Lightning Bolt

The Main Goals of the deck

  1. Ramp

  2. Cast Huge shit, whether it be Spells or Creatures

  3. Wait for it to be removed or countered... repeat

Turn1- Land, Arbor Elf

Turn2- Land, Utopia Sprawl, Either Rosheen Meanderer, or Unbound Flourishing.... or Blood Moon for funsies

Turn3- Land, Basically any creature. Red Sun's Zenithbest withUnbound Flourishing just because it copies the spell even if someone counters

Turn4 Attack or play other spells

Obviously games will vary on what decks you are playing against. This is just what the deck should do by turn 4

  1. Fling- After you attack and you know you can finish the opponent off feel free to Fling

  2. Fatal Frenzy- Hydras should be able to get huge, add this along with that on the combat step, and infect has nothing on the pump you get.... oh then Flingif you want

  3. Kessig Wolf Run- Add this on combat step, if the stars line up, and you have Fatal Frenzy in your hand.... well the opponent may just concede, but if they try removal, and the planets lined up right along with those stars, Fling the shit out of them in response
