My kind of combo deck, very nice. You need something to toss cards in the graveyard like Grisly Salvage or Stinkweed Imp . Fauna Shaman does the job but you don't always have her.

I'm not seeing how Devoted Druid + Quillspike is infinite mana.

@ComputersAreDifficult:Infinite trample damage, not infinite mana.

Caes says... #5

ComputersAreDifficult, when both the Druid and quillspike are in the graveyard, Necrotic Ooze can pump itself to infinity then tap for mana and untapped itself with a -1/-1 counter an infinite number of times. Of course, the counters will kill the ooze at the end of the turn, so you should be sure you can win the turn you do it.

The pump ability actually eats the counters so the ooze lives. Unless you need the infinite green mana for something. Which with an infinite/infinite trampler....

Check out my Life From The Stinkweed Scholar's Birthing Ooze. It works off the same premise (Devoted Druid being awesome with the Ooze) but takes it to another level. I actually ended up cutting Quillspike simply because I found I never wanted it anywhere but my graveyard. Again, cheers to another ooze player!

@jminute14, Quillspike does some awesome things for this deck though. With Devoted Druid out it becomes an incredible blocker or can apply some decent pressure to my opponent. It also works very well with Kitchen Finks to help me to survive long enough to combo off. It is simple to get it into the graveyard as well, I simply attack with it without pumping it and my opponent has to block unless he/she wants me to pump it to infinity before the damage step.

Btw, I though your deck as awesome as well.

True, Quillspike is a lot more central to your strategy. It does do some awesome things, I just found for my deck it wasn't necessary.

How has it fared post-board? I'm concerned the abundance of graveyard hate will be a problem.

That was fairly prominent in my mind as I was constructing the deck as well. One good aspect about this deck is its ability to win without the ooze combo going off. A fair number of games are going to be won with just Quillspike and Thornling . That said, I've tried to prepare for as much graveyard hate as possible. I have Pithing Needle for cards like Relic of Progenitus and Deathrite Shaman , Ground Seal also protects me from the shaman and from Scavenging Ooze like effects, and Wickerbough Elder gives me a way to destroy enchantments and combos well with the ooze.

There is a FNM Modern tournament coming up at the store I play at and it will be my first chance to test the deck in a competitive settting. I'll post the results afterwards.

Did you think about Deity of Scars ? With Devoted Druid and Necrotic Ooze it basically just reads "0: regenerate Necrotic Ooze " Also, how effective is the Pod in your deck? Seems like it might just be there for the sake of being there

Caes says... #11

@ WolfWalrus I may add Deity of Scars in if keeping the ooze alive proves to big a problem, but as it stands, giving it indestructability with Thornling seems sufficient. Regarding Birthing Pod , it is not necessary for the deck to function by any stretch, but I have never been in a position where drawing it has been detrimental to my game. I like it as a two-of as it adds redundancy and inevitability to the deck.

I don't know if budget is a concern, but with a few fetchlands Drown in Filth has done some nice work in Travis Woo's Complex Dredge deck. Might be something to consider. My gut instinct is that your creature count is a bit high, but I don't have any suggestions on what to remove. Like the deck!

@jminute14 The deck fared much better against graveyard hate than I expected it to. Pithing Needle proved invaluable against cards like Deathrite Shaman . A fair few games were won outright by Quillspike and Devoted Druid . Thornling did an amazing job of blocking Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite until I could nuke it with the ooze. Overall, the deck proved far more versatile than I expected.

you sicken me! (+1 nice!)

Unfortunately, Tree of Redemption does not grant you infinite life. If someone does enough damage to put your life total below 0, it doesn't matter if you throw that ability on the stack.

+1 for utter awesomeness anyways.

Caes says... #16

@metagrobolized Yeah, calling it infinite is a bit of a stretch considering I have to stop pumping the ooze at some finite point and then swap its toughness and my life.

September 6, 2013 1:32 p.m.

Alright, I stand corrected. I guess even if someone else had infinite damage you could pump and swap onto the stack for a draw.

What if you put a couple Illusionist's Bracers in here?

September 6, 2013 2:22 p.m.

Caes says... #18

metagrobolized, I considered them when first building the deck, but then I realized that most abilities in this deck are either mana abilities or infinite. The bracers do nothing in either case. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Love the deck but why the one of for Duress and Inquisition? +1

September 8, 2013 8:38 a.m.

MindAblaze says... #20

@ rache they're for protecting your combo. Checking their hand for the disruptive removal, counters or graveyard hate and taking it away.

They're also useful for disrupting the other guys combo when it comes up.

September 8, 2013 12:24 p.m.

Caes says... #21

@ rache Yeah, MindAblaze! pretty much covered it. They are there to make sure my opponent doesn't have anything that could disrupt my combo, such as graveyard hate or a counter for the ooze. I am planning on replacing them with 2 Thoughtseize when I can aquire some.

Since your running black and green, considers Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord + quillspike + devoted druid. simply sacrifice quillspike and deal 99 damage to each player. Only thing is it would be inconsistent strategy alone, but in addition with your deck.. gets me interested.

each opponent** i should say

September 11, 2013 7:05 p.m.

Caes says... #25

@ ordinarycrab, that is a wonderful suggestion! Jarad lets me throw creatures in the graveyard and performs Bloodrite Invoker 's role in a much more efficient fashion, not to mention that he works both through necrotic ooze when all three pieces are in the graveyard and when all three pieces are on the field. I will definitely be picking up a couple the next time I go to FNM. Thanks for pointing that out.
