Maybeboard

Overview

Hello Everyone! Welcome to my Titania, Protector of Argoth list. This is a combo deck that masquerades as a normal Titania, Protector of Argoth list. Most wins with the deck are very sudden and can come out of absolutely nowhere, albeit hoops often need to be jumped through in order to get there. You don't have that much of a board presence turn five? Well, guess what - turn six victory. The deck is also extremely reliable and resilient as we have numerous methods of winning, usually abusing the ever-loving shit out of Aluren, Temur Sabertooth, and Eternal Witness. If you love atypical combo decks that can win out of nowhere then this is the deck for you. However, due to the nature of it's atypicalness, this deck is extremely hard to pilot due to the decision making required when comboing off. You will have to jump through hoops in order to win.

This is probably my favorite deck I have built right now, and one of my favorite decks I've ever built. I like it even more than my Sythis, Harvest's Hand deck. It can establish an early lead, it can dominate the lategame, it can recover extremely quickly, and as I've said it can win out of absolutely nowhere. I adore this deck. I wanted to foil it out, however I don't have the kind of money for that. As such, I've decided to proxy about 2/3 of the cards in the deck with a foil version. The remaining 1/3 don't have alters though because I already had them in foil, and as such they stay as real cards.

History

This is my seventh version of Titania, Protector of Argoth. She is a commander I had built in 2017, but I ended up taking the deck apart whenever I quit Magic when I went off to college. However, years later, I've decided to rebuild her as I believe she's gotten more toys to play with over the last few years and I genuinely enjoy her playstyle. The deck used to be a Lands-Matter goodstuff deck, much more similar to popular brews of her such as Titania EDH by Ashcashcash. However, after experimenting with Summer Bloom due to a post by jaymc1130, I decided to turn my goodstuff deck into a pure combo deck built around Summer Bloom.

How to Play

The deck functions sort of differently from other variations I've seen of Titania, Protector of Argoth - most notably, the lack of landfall outside of the obvious (Lotus Cobra and Tireless Provisioner). The deck seeks to play lands that make you sacrifice either themselves or other lands to trigger Titania, Protector of Argoth's ability to make Elemental Tokens and swing out. These lands are like Scorched Ruins, Lotus Vale, and Lotus Field.

Right now, the main engine in the deck is Aluren + Eternal Witness + Temur Sabertooth. From here, there is ALOT you can do with the deck.

Oh boy. This combo is the result of a brainstorming session I had because of another Tappedout user. Essentially, this combo revolves around casting Summer Bloom an arbitrarily large amount of times in order to play an absurd amount of lands to generate an absurd amount of mana. Feast your eyes upon this monstrosity:

Please dear God forgive me for what I have created

Confused? Please dear God don't be - we've only just begun. Regardless, this is a 10-card combo that enables us to generate an arbitrarily large amount of mana. That may seem daunting, but it's honestly rather easy to assemble as it's just running cards we'd try and play regardless. Essentially, it works like this:

  1. With Aluren, Temur Sabertooth, Zuran Orb or Sylvan Safekeeper, Ancient Greenwarden or Ramunap Excavator, and Lotus Cobra or Tireless Provisioner or Vernal Bloom on the battlefield, cast Eternal Witness targeting Summer Bloom in your graveyard. You also need one green and one generic mana.
  2. Sacrifice three forests to put them in your graveyard and then, or already having three forests in your graveyard, cast Summer Bloom for two mana.
  3. Play three Forests from your graveyard.*
  4. The ETB of each Forest should cause you to either float one mana from Lotus Cobra or generate a treasure token from Tireless Provisioner. Then, tap the three Forests for three mana, or six mana if you have Vernal Bloom. No matter how you go about doing this, you should be getting six mana.
  5. Return Eternal Witness to your hand using two mana.
  6. Cast Eternal Witness targeting Summer Bloom in your graveyard.
  7. Repeat from step #2
  8. Profit because you generate two mana every loop

From here, you can do a myriad of things. The easiest thing to do though is just have our general, Titania, Protector of Argoth, out to capitalize on three lands being sacrificed every loop to make an arbitrarily large number of 5/3 Elemental tokens. From here, drop a Concordant Crossroads and swing for game. If you don't have a Concordant Crossroads, you can draw your deck through Greater Good, recurring Rishkar's Expertise or Explore by targeting them with Eternal Witness instead since you've already generated a needless amount of mana, or being very careful with Garruk's Uprising or Elemental Bond. You could use Regal Force too, but if you already made infinite Elementals you will kill yourself. You could also just cast a Finale of Devastation paying X=10+ and literally get anything since it gives your things haste if X is equal to or greater than 10.

HOWEVER, if you're already past your combat step for whatever reason, you can loop cards like Acidic Slime, Beast Within, Return to Nature, or Krosan Grip an arbitrarily large number of times to kill everyone's artifacts and enchantments with Krosan Grip or Nature's Claim, everyone's lands with Acidic Slime, and creatures and planeswalkers with Beast Within. However, if you use Beast Within, they will be left with an army of 3/3's. However, you should have an arbitrarily large number of 5/3's, so you should be fine. You can also exile everyone's graveyards after clearing their boards with Return to Nature.

  • Step #3 Note: These could be any lands that do not ETB tapped, cause you to sacrifice other lands, and tap for mana. Forests are used simply for ease and the fact that Vernal Bloom requires forests. You can circumnavigate the ETB'ing tapped by using Amulet of Vigor and you could also have a Yavimaya, Cradle of Growth out if you really wanted to use lands like Windswept Heath instead. For the love of God though, just use 3x Forests. Please. I beg of you.

This combo is sort of similar to the Summer Bloom combo previously mentioned. It starts off with the same engine - Aluren + Temur Sabertooth + Eternal Witness. However, ultimately it requires more cards to use. Here is a basic overview of this combo:

Splendid Reclamation

Cards I'm considering replacing:

Oh boy, this game. This game was wild. It was with my normal playgroup, and my friends were piloting Arcades, the Strategist tribal wall, Fynn, the Fangbearer infect, and Ishkanah, Grafwidow tribal spiders. I ended up keeping a somewhat risky hand, as it didn't have any ramp, but had a Forest, Petrified Field, and Lotus Vale. For the first few turns, I sat there and played my lands. By turn five, I had four permanents on the board - three of them being lands. It was not looking good. However, I managed to play my commander and by turn six I had nine permanents on the board - four of them being lands. The Arcades, the Strategist player killed the Ishkanah, Grafwidow player through combat damage, and left me at 13 life and the Fynn, the Fangbearer player at around 25 life. The Arcades player looked at me, said "I wanna watch you struggle," and passed the turn. What ended up happening was a twenty minute turn where I managed to get a Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, Greater Good, Summer Bloom, and Carpet of Flowers, allowing me to dig and get a bunch of mana to play Lotus Cobra, after which I played a Amulet of Vigor followed by a Scapeshift. I was able to make a bunch of mana and dig for Eternal Witness and Temur Sabertooth. I had the Aluren and Ancient Greenwarden in hand, and so I dug for a Zuran Orb.

Somehow I was able to make the cacophony of a mess 9-card combo work in an actual game. I was able to generate infinite mana, make infinite tokens, and blow up everyone's permanents with Acidic Slime and Beast Within, and then exile everyone's graveyards with Scavenging Ooze. I won, but I had to fight for it.

This game was with my normal playgroup. My friends were piloting Fynn, the Fangbearer infect, Kresh the Bloodbraided +1/+1 counters, and Lathril, Blade of the Elves tribal elves. I ended up keeping a hand of Eternal Witness, Aluren, Temur Sabertooth, Zuran Orb, Edge of Autumn, Forest and Archaeological Dig. The Kresh player pulled out to an early lead, while I had a slower start. Rather quickly I was reduced to about 10 life through attacks by the Kresh and Fynn players. Turn 3 I played the Temur Sabertooth and turn 4 I ended up playing the Aluren, to which nobody really did anything to. Turn 5 I played a Rishkar's Expertise, drawing four cards. Turn 6 I recurred the Rishkar's Expertise using Eternal Witness and played it. Over turns 5 and 6 I ended up getting a fair amount of advantage, including a Lotus Cobra, Food Chain, Titania, Protector of Argoth, and Ramunap Excavator. Turn 7 was an absolutely critical turn - I was dead before my next turn to the Kresh the Bloodbraided player. I absolutely had to win this turn.

Over a period of around twenty minutes, I managed to assemble the Splendid Reclamation combo. I don't remember how exactly I did it, but it was hardfought victory. I remember using all my mana for something, and then having to exile my commander to Food Chain to play Ancient Greenwarden to exile that back to Food Chain to replay my commander in order to recur a Forest to float one mana off of Lotus Cobra and get a treasure token from Tireless Provisioner in order to do anything. However, this game only reinforced my belief - this is arguably the hardest deck to pilot I've ever built - even more so than my Selvala, Heart of the Wilds storm deck. It can pull wins out of nowhere, but you have to work for the wins.

I play on the PlayEDH discord. There, this deck is classified as "High Power".
I played a game on the PlayEDH discord using this deck. I was up against Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant control, Emry, Lurker of the Loch control, and Eleven, the Mage + Will the Wise blink burn. The game started off simple enough and I was able to do early game things unimpeded. The Jin-Gitaxias player held a commanding presence a majority of the game, and the other three of us had to use plenty of interaction on keeping him in check. However, Due to a well-timed Force of Vigor, I was able to prevent him from winning. Throughout the game, I had been swinging at the Emry and Jin-Gitaxias players with Elemental tokens, and had managed to reduce their life totals to around 15 each. After a counter war including a Pact of Negation from both the Jin-Gitaxias and Eleven + Will players, I was able to make a bunch of Elementals and give them haste via Concordant Crossroads, killing the Jin-Gitaxias player. The next turn, I was able to Finale of Devastation for 10, getting Craterhoof Behemoth and swinging at the other two players, killing them both at once.

All in all, I couldn't believe I won the game. The Jin-Gitaxias player tried three different times to win, but ultimately he was short on mana due to having to engage in Counterspell wars. I believe I only won due to the other players spending too many resources trying to stop one another, and the fact that lands cannot be countered. Land combo OP!

All Stars:

  • Greater Good - This card worked wonders as it allowed me card advantage whenever they tried to destroy either my elementals or Titania herself.
  • Food Chain - Allowed me to bait out a Counterspell from the Jin-Gitaxias player. He then died to hasty Elementals via a Concordant Crossroads I was worried about getting countered that I played later that turn.

I intend on at some point writing a primer for this deck, as I believe writing primers help explain the deck to others and allows the creator/writer a deeper understanding of the deck itself.
