"Behold, the flag of kick-assery!"

Welcome to Tajic: A Primer!

Well, hello there! If you navigated to this page, you must be one of two types of people. You're either saying to yourself:

A) "Boros! MY FAVORITE! AHHHH I'M EXCITED!!!"

Or,

B) "Why on earth would anyone willingly pick this shitty legend, Tajic, Blade of the Legion , as their EDH commander?! He's even in the worst colors!!"

Hopefully, after reading this primer, folks from both parties will find themselves satisfied!

Why play Tajic as my commander?

  1. He only costs 4.
  2. He is indestructible.
  3. He has a tremendous Battalion trigger.

Given points 1 and 2, Tajic presents himself as a powerful Voltron commander. However, point 3 means he also needs supporting creatures to attack along with him to make him nice and burly. Tajic is also not a traditionally "scary" commander, so he's fairly political in that regard.

Play this deck if:

  1. You like EDH aggro decks and your playgroup isn't 100% cutthroat competitive.
  2. You love Voltron decks and equipment tutoring.
  3. You enjoy getting recursive value out of your cards.

Do not play this deck if:

  1. You enjoy infinite combos that instantly win the game.
  2. Your playgroup runs tier 1 try-hard generals.
  3. You refuse to play R/W, the redheaded stepchild EDH color combination.

Building an Army: Token Generators

  1. Dragonmaster Outcast: Slowly makes dragon tokens to help Tajic's Battalion trigger. Can be fetched with Ranger of Eos.
  2. Elspeth, Sun's Champion: Her +1 quickly builds a soldier army which has strong synergy with Skullclamp. Her -2 blows up non-weenie creatures, which Tajic survives. God help our opponents if they let her -7 resolve.
  3. Martial Coup: Destroys all creatures, leaving us with a board full of tokens (and Tajic!).
  4. Brimaz, King of Oreskos: Strong offensively and defensively, Brimaz's vigilance makes him a good Voltron target early on. His tokens can help trigger Tajic's Battalion, and they can be Skullclamped for value.
  5. Feldon of the Third Path: Mana-intensive, but a pure value engine given our wealth of utility creatures.
  6. Chandra, Flamecaller: Her +1 gives Tajic a Battalion trigger, her 0 is a selfish Windfall plus a card, and her -X can wipe the board (except for Tajic!)
  7. Mobilization: Gives Tajic vigilance, which he sorely needs. Also makes soldier tokens.
  8. Sword of Body and Mind: Gives Tajic protection from blue and green, allowing him to get past green fatties and avoid pesky blue instants. The mill is mediocre, but getting a Wolf token is useful for Tajic's Battalion trigger.
  9. Assemble the Legion: Useful for Tajic's Battalion, and for Skullclamping. Generally this is a threat that needs to be answered or it gets out of hand.
  10. Nahiri, the Lithomancer: Her +1 makes Soldier tokens that get a free equip. Her -2 can recur a lost equipment. Her -10 will give Tajic huge pumps and double strike; scary!
  11. Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker: Pure value, and the deck has lots of targets to copy. Great with Reveillark, Karmic Guide, Blinding Angel, Ranger of Eos, Angel of Finality, Stoneforge Mystic, Sun Titan, and so on. There are a few legends Kiki can't target, but overall he's a strong inclusion.

Equipment: It's What's For Dinner

  1. Avarice Amulet : This card is poop at first glance, but it's actually really solid since the commander replacement effect means, as long as you only equip this to Tajic, you'll never have to give it away. Plus, he's hard to kill anyway!
  2. Lightning Greaves: Important to prevent Tajic from pesky Path to Exile effects.
  3. Sword of Light and Shadow: Powerful color protection. Since the CMC of our creatures are low, this is a really great sword to hit people with because we can easily recast our guys.
  4. Skullclamp: This is almost always the best first tutor target. It's just so much card advantage with the token generators in the deck, and Boros colors yearn for card draw.
  5. Sword of the Animist: This is a great early game tutor target, as it ensures you can keep pace in a longer game if it's a 4 or 5 player battle.
  6. Worldslayer: Tajic's personal favorite, Worldslayer just makes the game miserably hilarious if he connects with this. It won't outright win the game, and yeah, Obliterate would've probably been more consistent, but this is just FUNNY.
  7. Sword of Body and Mind: Mediocre token generation, strong color protection.
  8. Sword of Fire and Ice : Strong card draw, decent color protection.
  9. Sunforger: We have 9 targets to tutor for! Plus, +4/+0 on Tajic is pretty nice.

Updates Add

After some play testing, I'm happy to report the deck has really nice card advantage engines and synergies that work together very nicely.

Unfortunately, the deck is extremely weak to mass artifact & creature destruction. I'm considering putting in Faith's Reward and/or Second Sunrise to combat these problems. They can also be fetched with Sunforger, which makes them even more attractive.

I'm having some concerns about Tajic reliably getting general damage through. Not sure how to make him a more reliable general-damage dealer. Working on ideas.

Thanks for reading!
