This started with taking the +1/+1 counter route with the Breed Lethality Commander 2016 precon. After playing with Atraxa, Praetors' Voice at the helm for a bit it became obvious that Ishai, Ojutai Dragonspeaker and Reyhan, Last of the Abzan just work better for this style build. You essentially start with an extra card in hand with the partner mechanic, and between them you have both a way to keep the counters you accrue on the board (something Atraxa has a real problem with) as well as an engine to generate a ton more. Dumping 40+ +1/+1 counters on Walking Ballista and everyone at the table knowing they are all held at gun point (or Hangarback Walker or Chasm Skulker) just feels good :p
