EDH (Elvish Demon Highlander)

Modern Budget Combo Elves Mono-Green

EDH, Elvish Demon Highlander. Loads of elves and one big, scary demon. As for the number of pips on each card? There can be only one.

Credit where credit is due: Tappedout user Andramalech recently posted a fantastic colorless deck focused around Westvale Abbey   and unleashing Ormendahl, Profane Prince   as the wincon. I tried building a similar deck a few times over the years, but where I failed he succeeded. Check it out here: Westvale Atlas. It inspired me to revisit the decrepit remains of a different iteration and to resurrect it into something presentable.

Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest gets a lot of hate. Some of it is deserved (cryptic hints that got lost in translation or that tedious pop up every time day shifts to night…), but a lot of it is unwarranted. It exudes creepy atmosphere by the boatload—undead fiends roaming the countryside waiting to fall upon weary travelers, a plot involving hunting down Dracula’s scattered body parts to beckon the dark lord, and spooky mansions in the middle of the woods—all of which invariably conjure up images of Westvale Abbey   ensconced within a forbidden forest.

Fortunately for us, the

ahem, sorry about that. Fortunately for us, the mana base is a no brainer. Loads of basic forests do the grunt work while Westvale Abbey   —or rather, what lurks within—   bides its time.

A mana making pile of secrets!

Mana generating elves like Elvish Mystic and Llanowar Elves coupled with the time tested Arbor Elf + Utopia Sprawl combo means we fly low to the ground and as fast as possible.

Skyshroud Ranger and Elvish Reclaimer ensure we locate Westvale Abbey   and have the means to play it as needed, with Commune with Spirits as backup. I went with this over, say, Adventurous Impulse or Ancient Stirrings because the former only grabs 3 cards (and our creatures are largely redundant and non-priority), while the latter can only grab a land (Commune with Spirits could hypothetically also nab a Utopia Sprawl if we somehow need more ramp).

If one were to blur the lines between Andramalech’s original colorless build and this mono copycat, Ancient Stirrings would likely prove the superior card.

Ormendahl, Profane Prince   is easy enough to flip with our cavalcade of elvish fodder. Simply tap enough elves to produce , then sacrifice them. Protect the Abbey   if necessary using Avoid Fate or Tamiyo's Safekeeping.

Once flipped, the unholy fiend can vent its wrath immediately. Haste makes waste.

There is no tangible benefit to running a deck comprised solely of 1 drop spells; it was merely a personal challenge to spice things up. Nevertheless, each and every spell contained herein costs only one pip. Consider it analogous to collecting the single red orb thingy at the end of each stage in a classic Castlevania game ^_^

Fun fact: Do you like Highlander? Do you like SpongeBob? This guy is Mr Krabbs :D

Money money money money money!

•Plop down as many mana making elves as you can, as quickly as you can.

•Acquire and play Westvale Abbey   using Commune with Spirits or Skyshroud Ranger if necessary.

•Generate with help from your elves, thank them by sacrificing them to Westvale Abbey,   then promptly wreak havoc on your opponent with a flipped Ormendahl, Profane Prince  .

Open to suggestions!

”Many of them were saying: “He has a demon and is out of his mind.””

Shifting Woodland is here on a trial basis. Solid card with good potential, but this current iteration isn’t set up to pitch Westvale Abbey  Flip to the graveyard and even if I could I’m unsure if I can reliably trigger Delerium. Running 3 copies for now so as not to interfere with Utopia Sprawl or Arbor Elf but may adjust or remove after review.
