Sideboard

Maybeboard

I heard you like drawing cards...

Main Aim

Draw cards as much as you can while Lorescale Coatl and Horizon Chimera are out.

This deck is meant for 2v2 play. Highly recommend against 1v1 play. No mainboard removal, only counters.

This deck has a low land count, make sure you start the game with at least 2 mana or else mulligan. This deck also doesn't really suffer from having more than 60 deck size because you cycle through cards like crazy, still the closer to 60 the better.

Help, suggestions or feedback appreciated

Cards

Portent - Great no matter who you use on, defers the can trip until next turn so can be used to drop a card if struggling with hand-size. Can be switched out for Hardened Scales.

Brainstorm - This card counts as 3 draws, which means it triggers Horizon Chimera and Lorescale Coatl three times (also triggers Jace, Arcane Strategist for what it's worth).

Rhystic Study - The gift that keeps giving. Rack up the draw, the hardest part is remembering the trigger. If the opponent pays the cost it's a small win, if they don't it's a bigger win.

Ice-Fang Coatl - A great surprise defender. Flash, Flying, Deathtouch AND a free card; this card is too good.

Horizon Chimera - The extra life is nice but can't win us the game. The flying + trample combo is what really makes this card worthy. Make sure to target this card with the Jace, Arcane Strategist passive ability triggers. This card can be somewhat hard to get out due to it's 4CMC, always summon Lorescale Coatl over Horizon Chimera if you have both in hand unless you need to block a flying beatstick. If possible flash it in at the end of an opponents turn to ensure you get the most value before it is removed/killed.

Lorescale Coatl - A self pumping creature that will get nice and tasty quite quickly if not removed/dealt with. Worst case scenario it gets +1/+1 a turn.

Jace, Arcane Strategist - A pumping machine. Give a creature you own at least +1/+1 a turn. The -7 wins you game if you have any creatures on the board that have been pumped. Could switch for Jace, Wielder of Mysteries or Cavalier of Gales.

Baral, Chief of Compliance - A smaller engine that is pure utility. Reduce the cost of things so you can pick up more, whenever you counter anything with Keep Safe or Disrupt/Siren Stormtamer, pick up an extra card.

Grip of the Roil - Great for multiplayer, tap a card AND a cantrip. Use on a Betrayal'd creature for double card pickup.

Keep Safe - Counter and cantrip. Use to keep your Engines alive. Combo's with Baral, Chief of Compliance. Could be switched out for Confound if the opponents decks like to buff their creatures.

Siren Stormtamer - Keep cards on the table, effectively a Spellskite

Disrupt - Counter and cantrip. Use to keep your Engines alive. Combo's with Baral, Chief of Compliance.

Betrayal - This either stops a creature from attacking/mana-dorking or gives you a card. That's a win-win. The combo with Grip of the Roil is just a bonus.

Veil of Summer - (Sideboard) Great against Black/Blue decks. Kind of situational. Verdant Rebirth is a better choice if going up against deathtouch.

Rending Vines - (Sideboard) Cantrip and removal of artifact or enchantment. The double forest is the only downside and my hinder quick play of the card.

Llanowar Elves - Provide some much needed ramp.

Shapers' Sanctuary - Triggers even if the spell targetting your permanent is countered. This just adds a deterent to being targetted and lessens the blow of being targetted. IDeally we don't want to be targetted at all.

Gaea's Blessing - Stops you from being milled, but it's real purpose is to bring back Elixir of Immortality if it got removed. Do not use this for any other reason unless you have to. Is also a cantrip.

Elixir of Immortality - Stop from decking yourself. The added 5 life to stall is nice also. If both Elixir of Immortality AND Gaea's Blessing are in the graveyard you are on a death timer.

Changes & Theories

What if X was added?

Foreshadow - Works really well with Portent however due to the low card count of Portent is very situational. Either add 2 more copies of Portent and all copies of Foreshadow or leave Foreshadow out entirely. The exact same combo can be done with Lammastide Weave.

Zegana, Utopian Speaker - A good card but high CMC, a prime target for removal and requires Jace, Arcane Strategist.

Fathom Mage - This card combo's okay with Jace, Arcane Strategist. If only Jace's ability triggered for every card draw (one can dream). Could work well if Primal Empathy was added to the deck as well, but Primal Empathy would have to replace Rhystic Study.

Primal Empathy - This card is more consistent than Rhystic Study giving you an extra card draw OR a +1/+1 and card draw a turn if paired with Fathom Mage. Rhystic Study doesn't require another card to function, generally gives at least 1 card draw per opponent per turn and may merit 4 or more card draws in a single turn. Sylvan Library also has the same consistent draw per turn, has twice the card draw and is 1 CMC less than Primal Empathy.

Well of Lost Dreams - Combo's with Horizon Chimera until you're out of mana. Due to the low mana count of this deck it's not consistently viable enough.

Zameck Guildmage - Combo's with Lorescale Coatl until you're out of mana. Twice the mana cost of the Well of dreams combo, but you get a 2/2 with it. Due to the low mana count of this deck it's not consistently viable enough. Needs Hardened Scales to be viable, which could be used if Portent is replaced.

Curiosity - Could switch for Betrayal, would lose combo with Grip of the Roil for the extra utility. Ideally you don't want to be using Curiosity on opponent's creatures though because you don't want them to attack you.

Cards that were replaced.

Sylvan Library - Seems like a perfect card for this deck: get the additional draw triggers without having to keep the cards in hand. Select the best card of the three to keep and put the rest back. Multiple Sylvan Library's do not stack and instead resolve in sequence but you still get the additional draw triggers. Unfortunatley Rhystic Study is just better overall than Sylvan Librarys even though opponents can't counter the Sylvan Library draw and it costs 1 CMC less to play. Taxing the opponents is much better than losing life for cards. However if there was room for it both in the deck then they would be both ve in.

Cursecatcher - Replaced by Siren Stormtamer

Thornwood Falls - replaced by Reliquary Tower.

Disrupt - replaced by Cursecatcher. Card slots taken by Shapers' Sanctuary.

Benthic Biomancer - Replaced by Cursecatcher.

Elvish Visionary - Replaced by Benthic Biomancer. A worse Ice-Fang Coatl. Could be replaced with Wistful Selkie (possibly Runic Armasaur) but the extra CMC is probably not worth it.

Cultivate - Some good ramp to grab some lands since the deck is low on land count. Works well with Growth Spiral.

Growth Spiral - Works well with Cultivate. Otherwise it's just a cantrip for two CMC.

Utopia Sprawl - Switched out for Hinterland Harbor.

Cards by Turn

Siren Stormtamer - Best card to play on the draw or play.

Portent - Second best card on the play. Target either teammate or opponnent.

Betrayal - Second best card on the draw.

Brainstorm - Not bad on the play/draw, generally want to save these until an engine is out, but can be used earlier.

Disrupt, Shapers' Sanctuary - Not bad on the play, you have to somewhat know the opponents deck.

Ice-Fang Coatl - The best card to get out if the opponent has flying out. Even though you won't get the deathtouch on T2, if you have very good T3 cards then getting this out early is your best bet. You want removal and counter spells wasted on this card so that Lorescale Coatl can get out next turn.

Grip of the Roil - Good card but will leave you tapped without a creature on the field if played T2. You might need to play this to stop heavy aggression.

Confound - see Grip of the Roil.

Keep Safe - see Grip of the Roil.

Baral, Chief of Compliance - The earlier he comes out the earlier he gets removed. Wait until you can cast some spell to ensure he resolves and to take advantage of the passive.

Gaea's Blessing - Try not to play this card unless Elixir of Immortality is in the graveyard.

Lorescale Coatl - Going against heavy creatures, get him out. You want a Keep Safe or Disrupt in your hand, or pray that you pick one up next turn.

Rhystic Study - Going against combo, get this out.
