Dragontaker [Hivis of the Scale Dragon Tribal]

Commander / EDH Casual Dragons Flying Mono-Red

Ritunn

Hivis of the Scale is a strange and narrow legendary creature which, similar to Rubinia Soulsinger , allows you to take control of a creature as long as he remains tapped. Said creature can only be a dragon however.

Playing the Deck

The basic strategy of this deck is focused on temporarily ramping using ritual cards like Seething Song and Mana Geyser to play powerful dragons early and gain an advantage.

Early game you want to look to play your ramp, such as Fire Diamond , Dragon's Hoard , and Wayfarer's Bauble and play early game creatures like Dragon Whisperer and Slumbering Dragon . You also have access to Dragonlord's Servant and Dragonspeaker Shaman to play your dragons earlier without rituals.

Mid-game you're looking to play your rituals to cheat out powerful flying threats such as Drakuseth, Maw of Flames , Scourge of Valkas , and Bogardan Hellkite . In addition to this, you have good 4 drop dragons like Opportunistic Dragon and Skyship Stalker to put pressure on your opponents and block early threats.

By late game you can begin laying down your dragons without rituals and taking advantage of Skyline Despot and Dragon Whisperer to generate dragon tokens.

From there you can either end the game by using your dragons combined with Insult / Injury or Mob Rule .

Additional Tips and Info

Hivis exists to deal with dragons your opponents may have blocking your path. Against other dragon tribal decks, he shines, but you have Death by Dragons and Blades of Velis Vel to ensure there's always dragons in play to steal. Descent of the Dragons is a fun option to add as well that fits with these cards.

If you find yourself needing to control to board, Hour of Devastation , Scourge of Valkas , and Thunder Dragon are just some of your options to remove threats from the board.

If you're running low on cards, Khorvath's Fury and Reforge the Soul allow you to wheel away your hand. Tormenting Voice and looting effects like it are also in abundance to get you the cards you need.

My Favorite Cards

  • Price of Glory : With barely any instants in this deck, it punishes opponents for being reactive and devastates any deck looking to do things not on their turn.
  • Opportunistic Dragon & Rapacious Dragon : These dragons pull double duty by ramping us and getting bodies on board. Opportunistic Dragon has stolen many a Sol Ring in its time, but can also steal problematic or useful Human cards too.
  • Dragon Tempest : It fulfills a similar role to Hammer of Purphoros by giving our dragons haste, however, late game it can finish off opponents and deal with creature-based threats.
