Minor deck updates —Sept. 3, 2012

Just made a few minor edits and tucked all comments to clean things up.

I've been working on a budget version of this deck for casual play. Almost all of the $10+ cards are gone and replaced with some cheaper cards that have a similiar effect. Some are still in there, as I felt they were needed. Could you take a look to see where I can improve it while still holding it as budget as possible?

I'm strongly considering adding Exploration and Phantasmal Image . Necropotence is also up for consideration, but less so than the others.

I'm also considering cutting Exsanguinate . The friend that I've been codesigning this list with (we each play a variant of it) was pointing out to me earlier that card:Blue Sun's Zenith will often be just as reliable a kill spell, even in multiplayer.

One of your control interactions is using Mana Web and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth . You might want to add Pendrell Mists to that so they have to tap out during their upkeep or lose all their creatures.

I find that most of my matchups aren't reliant on creatures, but it's an interesting thought. I need to figure out of the effect is really worth dedicating a slot to over something like Exploration .

Also an alternative would be the Tabernacle, if you have the money :D

I would consider it, but The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale has no inherent mana ability. I would need Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth out and it would also force me to pay for my own creatures, which hinders their utility.

Also, I understand that deadeye navigator is really powerful, but it seems that you rely possibly a bit too much on it, as it is part of almost every one of your engines and win conditions. I used to run it in my Sliver Queen deck, because of its interaction with etb creatures, but it didnt always have a soul mate, so alone it was pretty useless. Plus it would get removed basically instantly by the entire table haha.

But I really like that you cut the cards you did--as an example, Sphinx of Magosi is so underwhelming in this deck. And Life from the Loam is amazing. I've been trying to find a spot for it in my big creature deck but I probably won't be able to, and that makes me sad.

Phantasmal Image is going in as an alternative to Deadeye Navigator in making infinite mana with Palinchron . Some of the recursive loops work without Deadeye Navigator , they're just harder to pull off. I would say that I currently rely on Palinchron more than Deadeye Navigator .

Ok that makes sense. Have you thought about an additional "land-untapper" such as Peregrine Drake , so your combos don't get shot when the main piece goes missing? Although I'm sure when Palinchron is being played you have as much countermagic backup as possible anyways.

August 18, 2012 6:48 p.m.

Peregrine Drake lacks the self-bouncing ability of Palinchron , which makes it a lot weaker. The Drake would be a completely dead card without Deadeye Navigator , which makes it a lot less appealing.

There is an infinite turn combo in the deck that works without Palinchron and can work without Deadeye Navigator .

And I know this is a colorless-producing land, but I've seen card:Alchemist's Refuge be killer in combo decks, especially with Seedborn Muse

Yea that's certainly true. Okie dokie, just bouncing some ideas around :-)

August 18, 2012 7:21 p.m.

card:Alchemist's Refuge is already in the list.

It never hurts to make a suggestion. Considering all options is how great decks get built.

Untapped vs tapped?

That's what I was thinking, but I don't know the versatility seems worth the former.

Skyshroud Claim is one of the best ramp spells in the EDH format. In decks using many basics, Explosive Vegetation is a great card; however, in decks such as this that have few basics, Skyshroud Claim is vastly better because it fetches dual lands as well.

August 18, 2012 8:05 p.m.

Skyshroud Claim finds any forests, not just basic ones. The untapped clause is icing on the cake. It's a ramp spell that I can cast and still have counterspell mana up.

Oops didn't notice card:Alchemist's Refuge was already there. Exploration seems good. What about Burgeoning ? Other players will be ramping as muh as possible, and If you run sufficient card draw you can outpace all other opponents with it. But I understand it has some drawbacks in that it's conditional on other players' decisions.

August 18, 2012 8:09 p.m.

Burgeoning is also already in the list, and Exploration is on my list of considerations. I chose Phantasmal Image over it just to diversify my combo options a bit.

Phantasmal Image seems good, but fragile. And apparently I'm blind. Didn't see Burgeoning before :-(

August 18, 2012 8:34 p.m.

Phantasmal Image copies creatures with ETB effects, kills generals, and goes infinite with Palinchron . While fragile in some respects, it's certainly a very strong card and something worth running.
