Maybeboard

Have you ever wanted to give your playgroup the bird? Now you can give them multiple Goaded birds. Are your opponents thirsty? Give them some milk and help them fight like a crow. No one should be surprised I'm making a deck with crows in it. Cast multi-typed cards & smack face with crows. Simple as.

Rendmaw is an excellent option for those playgroups that tend to end up in stalemates; no one wanting to make enemies by attacking first, or would rather leave it up to the chance of a dice roll. The other (potentially) fun thing about Rendmaw as a quasi-Goad strategy, is that it reduces some of the "feels bad" elements that typical Goad strategies inherently have in regards to removing some player agency of who they can attack. Rendmaw's crows will be flying around and pecking out people's eyes, but players can still attack with the rest of their board. Play testing and game reps will help dial in the ratio of Multi-Type Crow Production™ to other helpful and synergistic elements. Regardless, Rendmaw should be at home at more casual tables that may not want to do a full on Goad or forced combat strat.

For this iteration of Rendmaw, I am aiming to keep the game plan fairly simple:

  • Play a concentrated amount of primarily Artifact Creatures to trigger Rendmaw as often as possible, while still maintaining some artifact creature based synergies.

  • Utilize a variety of effects across our Artifact Creatures to disrupt where possible, or anthem up our own board for alpha strikes and parity breaking.

  • Let those birds fly and eventually anthem up our own, or make more than everyone else with the right support.

The deck currently runs no alt win cons or combos; it's just a murder of crows all the way down. I recently bought this pre-con, so this is currently a concept brew while I brew Winter, Cynical Opportunistfoil and decide which route I like more (and will have to buy/proxy fewer cards for).

I wish Rendmaw was Jund so I could Disrupt Decorum while I- .

This section may receive a bit more TLC as I continue to test which multi-type cards are most superfluous.

This section likely will need one or two more effects for consistency. TBD dependent on additional play testing.

This is the third time I've written this, but this is most likely for sure the section that gets some more TLC after more play testing and reps. I might remove some of the slower options for more instant speed removal.

This is a smorgasbord of effects that disrupt opponents' resources and ability to use them to their fullest extent.

  • Bojuka Bog

  • Scavenger Grounds

  • Hex Parasite - My gut tells me that this will likely be an early cut casualty. TBD.

  • Golgari Charm - The -1/-1 mode can certainly kill wider boards that haven't anthemed up yet, but can also dull an incoming attack.

  • Marionette Apprentice - As mentioned prior, the deck runs about 39 artifacts as of 9/24/24

  • Psychomancer - Ditto as Marionette Apprentice

  • Soulless Jailer - Graveyard and exile play hate. This can be a very meta dependent swap out if needed.

  • Gix, Yawgmoth Praetorfoil - Card draw can be tempting.

  • Raking Canopy - Deters non-Goad Crow flyers, and can be helpful if a game makes it to 1v1 against an opponent's crows.

  • Starscream, Power Hungry   - Tempt your opponents with the Monarch, and further incentivize them to smack each other.

  • Canoptek Scarab Swarm - More graveyard hate, and helps to create a mass of flyers to help break parity, or build up defenses as needed.

  • Revenge of Ravens - Partly a flavor include, but also helpful to deter attacks.

  • Triarch Stalker - Further sweeten the deal for attacking someone else that is totally The Arch Enemy™, and not you actually.

After all is said and done, we have to have the biggest corvids at the table. Rendmaw has to smack faces hard enough to close games.

Anthems

  • Signal Pest

  • Crashing Drawbridge - Maybe supplemented with, or replaced by Concordant Crossroad, which also has an additional typing for Rendmaw to care about.

  • Cyberman Patrol - Once more, the deck as of 9/24/24 is running 29 artifact creatures

  • Metallic Mimic - The majority of the time, this Mimic will be a Bird.

  • Adaptive Automaton - This Automaton will also be a Bird most of the time.

  • Bow of Nylea - Give our attacking creatures death touch, has multiple typings, and has additional utility uses. Slap it in this deck.

  • Liberator, Urza's Battlethopter - Helps give our artifacts an element of surprise, and can balloon into an evasive beater.

  • Ohran Frostfang - Give the board death touch and draw some cards.

  • Triach Stalker - Help focus damage on that one opponent who is totally, actually, believe it or not, the forreals threat at the table.

  • Demolisher Spawn - By the time the deck can play this on curve, it should have at least one Artifact Creature in the graveyard, as well a couple of noncreature spells. Seems doable without a dedicated self-mill/discard package.

  • Graaz, Unstoppable Juggernaut - All of your crows are large Juggernauts. Absolutely jacked and brolic.

Token Support

  • Treasure Vault - Multiple card typings? Also can make a bunch of Treasures if needed.

  • Bitterblossom - Multiple card typings?? Helps break parity by helping to stay ahead of the curve on flyers, compared to the rest of the table (hopefully).

  • Arachnogenesis - Blank a combat and make some reach-y spiders.

  • Dalek Squadron - An army in a can that will hopefully be evasive enough to punch through defenses.

  • Arasta of the Endless Web - Multiple card ty- Another source of reach-y spiders, and also has reach herself.

  • Canoptek Scarab Swarm - Hose a graveyard, and create a swam of flying insect tokens to break parity.

  • Parallel Lives - An already great card that gets better in this deck because of the phrase "If an effect would put one or more tokes onto the battlefield under your control. While everyone else gets one crow, you get two.

  • Wurmcoil Engine - Dude dies and makes a couple of keyword wurms. Could maybe swap with a different wurm, perhaps a Massacre Wurm.
