Original (outdated) deck description Show

Trying to build something based on hand hate and making The Haunt of Hightower bigger and badder without simply playing Voltron. The deck isn't particularly unique in terms of mono-black gameplay, but I wanted to see what was possible with this many discard/murder/sacrifice effects. Any and all help or suggestions is greatly appreciated. I welcome any questions so that I can potentially find answers to things I didn't think about myself. Please comment and give me feedback!

WOWEE, hard to believe that this deck is two years old already. I've played it a number of times against my roommates and friends over the years in our fairly middling-to-high-skill-level casual playgroup, piloting it against decks which I'd say are usually around a power level of roughly 6 - 8, with most of them averaging around a 7 or 8. In that time, I noticed that the deck had a tendency to do one of two things about 85% of the time: I would either get a stellar / explosive first three or four turns and cripple my opponents' hands / early creature base, or I would sit and pray for an indeterminate amount of time to top-deck ramp or card-draw spells to get me into the game (on more than one occasion, I have top-decked a tutor and been so far behind that I was forced to search for ramp cards, which is just about the worst feeling ever). The other 15% of the time, I neither popped off nor sat back, which is acceptable, since in that situation I'm neither making myself a target nor enabling my opponents to snowball uncontested.

Since I first made the decklist two years ago, many new cards have either been released or entered my sphere of awareness. I've already changed the deck up a little from its original build, but overall it still looks very similar, and should feel similar to pilot, just a little more consistently than before, at least on paper. The biggest changes I made were swapping out outclassed cards for newer, better ones or ones that I'd simply overlooked previously ( Liliana's Specter for Burglar Rat , Banshee of the Dread Choir for Liliana, Waker of the Dead , for example), and I tried to include more card-advantage, but wasn't able to make much headway there, since I wasn't sure which cards to replace to make room.

For anyone who wouldn't mind giving me advice or critique, my sideboard is full of cards that I believe are decent-to-great fits for the deck and that I'm weighing the pros and cons against, but that I can't easily determine a card to replace in the current 99 with. The maybeboard is for cards I find interesting or unique, but that I'm not confident of their inclusion (it's mainly a place for me to remember things I've already seen or considered, or that I may want to revisit in the future).
