Tiamat or The Ur-Dragon

I've tried to design a deck that can be played with both Tiamat or The Ur-Dragon as the commander. The deck is tuned with Tiamat in mind and has clear wincons related to casting Tiamat, but sometimes you want to play your dragon deck in a less competitive environment. If you are playing with folks with decks that don't win by turn 7-8, consider playing The Ur-Dragon instead of Tiamat.

The game plan of this deck is very simple.

  1. Ramp
  2. Find either Jodah, Archmage Eternal or Fist of Suns and, if you are really lucky, also Rhythm of the Wild
  3. Play Tiamat
  4. Tutor for Morophon, the Boundless, Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks, and two support cards (I prefer Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund and Dragonlord Dromoka, depending on the situation)
  5. Utilize Morophon, the Boundless and Jodah, Archmage Eternal or Fist of Suns to play out your hand (doing significant damage by playing Terror of the Peaks and Scourge of Valkas, first)

First things first

In a perfect world, you will be able to play Defense of the Heart, allowing you to bring in Morophon, the Boundless and Jodah, Archmage Eternal. You also may get lucky and find a point in the game where you have both of these out and/or have Sneak Attack out and the ability to cast Tiamat with mana to spare. Below are lines of play you can make from this point, after you play Tiamat.

Lines of Play

  1. Strongest line of play: This one is more fool proof and a later thought on my part. This is likely the best line of play for the deck. Also, as a note, a new card: Tooth and Nail, has been added that gives us another way to get Morophon, the Boundless and Jodah, Archmage Eternal on the field:. First, tutor for Moritte of the Frost, Dragonlord Dromoka, Terror of the Peaks, Bladewing the Risen, and really anything else. The play here is to play Dromoka, first (securing your turn), then use Moritte on Tiamat, and send the Moritte Tiamat into the graveyard. You will bring this Moritte back to the field with Bladewing the Risen and, from there, recopy Tiamat or play and copy Terror of the Peaks. With this you should play in order to have scourge and terror kill your opponents with an alarming amount of damage, especially if the Dragon Queen comes down early in the sequence. With Dromoka being played first, this wincon cannot be avoided after you get him on the board.

  2. Tutor for Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund, Terror of the Peaks, Moritte of the Frost, Utvara Hellkite, Scourge of the Throne. Play card Terror of the Peaks. Use Moritte of the Frost to copy Terror of the Peaks. Play the remaining dragons and them over to combat. Even without connecting with your dragons, the damage created here from Utvara Hellkite and two Terror of the Peaks exceeds 120, killing 3 opponents. Without Scourge of the Throne granting an extra combat, you will still be able to do about 80 damage, killing 2 opponents.

  3. Tutoring for Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund, The Ur-Dragon, Hellkite Tyrant, Old Gnawbone, Moritte of the Frost. Play out each dragon, use Moritte of the Frost to copy Hellkite Tyrant, and swing. The damage created (assuming you connect), will create enough treasures via Old Gnawbone to win the game at the start of your next turn. Copying Hellkite Tyrant will give one more target that needs to be removed for you to win.

  4. Plan B. If the above fails, but you have a good chunk of dragons in the graveyard, a Living Death or Patriarch's Bidding can win you the game if it pulls in Scourge of Valkas and/or Terror of the Peaks and enough additional dragons. Note that Scourge of Valkas sees all dragons come in at the same time in this situation. If Scourge and 6 other dragons come in, that's 42 damage.

Below are various cards to help you find the tools to accomplish the dream.

Cde0's deck

The inspiration for this deck comes from Cde0's deck, The Hoard of the Dragon Queen. Cde0 has provided an excellent write up of some interesting interactions which are also relevant in this iteration of the deck.
