Maybeboard

Theme and Goals

A Black / Red deathtouch pingers and infect deck for casual play. This is a kitchen table deck based on the cards I have and ones I could find locally for a moderate price. This is a deck to play sparingly; it's pretty aggravating to face.

Deck Plan:
1.) Do early blocking with cheap deathtouch creatures.
2.) Clear the deck using pingers that have been given deathtouch. Goblin Sharpshooter is especially nice, as he can go machine gun on creatures.
3.) Once the blockers are gone, win using creatures with infect.

Tips:

  • In a pinch, killing one of your own weenie creatures can get your Goblin Sharpshooters untapped.
  • If you are fortunate enough to have multiple Goblin Sharpshooters on the board at once, keep in mind that just one creature dying will untap them all, so you can pound your opponent with all but one of them, kill something with the last one, then pound your opponent again, until you run out of creatures to target. If you're close enough to the goal line, your own Goblin Sharpshooters can be killed, one by one, to untap the rest and keep pounding the opponent. They're unlikely to see it coming. :-)
  • Potential Changes

  • Swap out Tymaret, the Murder King for something better.
  • Swap in more Gorgon's Head, once I have some.
  • Provide some sort of protection, such as Hexproof, for the Goblin Sharpshooters.
  • Categories and Cards

--> Set the pull-down menu above the deck list to Custom Categories to see the cards sorted by role. Clear the pull-down or set it to Type to restore the regular view.

These are the troops that are sent out front early to hold the line while the rest of the deck gets going.

  • Typhoid Rats - Cheap enough to trade for anything. Go ahead if the deck is coming together quickly. Otherwise, save them to keep their mid-range stuff out. They can also be saved for when you need to sacrifice or kill something cheap later on.
  • Pestilent Kathari - Gives you some coverage in the air, and if it comes out later in the game, the ability to add first strike keeps it relevant.

  • These are the snipers. Give them deathtouch, and let them clear the board to make way for the finishers. They can also be given infect in order to push the last bit of poison through in a pinch.

  • Goblin Sharpshooter - This guy, with deathtouch added, is your machine gun. Sweep the board, and leave the opponent worrying how to get new creatures past it. Be forewarned, this will be a removal magnet.
  • Tymaret, the Murder King - A 2-point pinger in black and red that can come back from the graveyard. He requires sacrifices, but by the time you're pinging, there should be some early blockers you can spare. This can also serve as another way to get your Goblin Sharpshooters untapped. He's in here mainly for the cool factor.
  • Vithian Stinger - Untaps normally and can come back from the graveyard for one final performance if it dies. Good enough.

  • These are the other half of the principal combination. They're here to give the pingers their death-ray powers. They can sometimes be useful on an infect creature as well ( Aspect of Gorgon buffs, and Necrobite regenerates), but that's secondary. I'd like to have more of the equipment for this role, but this is all I own.

  • Aspect of Gorgon - Persistent deathtouch effect, plus a useful buff effect.
  • Gorgon's Head - Remains for reuse if the creature it's on gets killed. Wish I had more. Basilisk Collar would be great too (and is strictly better).
  • Necrobite - The regeneration could come in handy to save a creature. I'd likely trade some of these for deathtouch equipment, if I had it.

  • Once the field is clear of blockers and more or less locked down, these are the finishers. Infect is quick, and as a win condition in this deck, it often comes as an unexpected shift of focus.

  • Hand of the Praetors - Pretty good costing and buffs other infectors.
  • Pestilent Souleater - Less efficient than the others in this category, but colorless could possibly come in handy.
  • Phyrexian Vatmother - The most efficient of my infectors. The drawback shouldn't be a problem, but if it got pacified, I'd hope to outrun the problem with other cards or possibly to have a death-pinger left to kill it with if necessary.
  • Scourge Servant

  • Assault Strobe - These are here primarily to increase the damage from the infect creatures and close the deal that much more quickly.
  • Burning Anger - This is another way to get the poison through.
  • These help me get the cards I need.

  • Outpost Siege - Khans
  • Underworld Connections - Works very well in play.
