Darkroot Garden (Slimefoot)

Commander / EDH BG (Golgari) Budget Tokens

Vilok

This deck is heavily inspired by the Darkroot Garden area of Dark Souls 1. A land with trees that attack you, full of moss and death, and Mushroom People. And the Mushroom Parent enemy is what Slimefoot seemed like to me. Complete with the Hydra enemy (Primordial Hydra), Princess Dusk (Azusa, Lost but Seeking) and plenty of mushrooms (saprolings) to go around!!

So, nitty griddy. What are trying to do with this deck? Make Saprolings, sac them for value, and drain our opponents out!!

There's lots of ways to do this with some potentially wacky interactions, so lets get to it!

First and foremost, it's green. So, mana ramp. Cultivate, Nissa's Renewal, and some others, but most importantly, Dictate of Karametra!

Lifecrafter's Beastiary let's us scry 1 at the beginning of our upkeep to help us dig for what we need; as well a drawing an additional card(s) if we pay a single G whenever we cast a creature spell.

Skullclamp. Come on, it's Skullclamp. Need I explain?

Our enchantments are REALLY going to help us get the 'W' in this game. Parallel Lives doubles the tokes that ETB from any effect of ours. Pestilence is the ideal way to deal with our saps. While it hurts us as well, we gain 1 grom each sap that dies, and if we kill 20, what's the harm in that? Cryptolith Rite is one I discovered recently to have a very nice interaction. It gives all out creatures the ability to tap to add one mana of any color. I happened to have 20 Saprolings on the field at the time. Tap them all and add a single green for our next spell: Full Flowering. XXG to populate X times. X becomes 10, then Parallel Lives says "Let's make it 20".

What about some beaters?

Mycoloth is best if we get the combo I mentioned in the last section as we can sac those 20 saps, getting Slimefoots trigger, then Mycoloth comes into play with 20 +1/+1 counters on it, and each of our upkeeps we would make 20 more saps!!

Syr Konrad, the Grim is a GREAT addition, to have out as he deals 1 damage to all but us whenever a creature (our sappy bois) die! Sporeweb Weaver is a 1/4 hexproof from blue that whenever it is dealt damage we gain 1 and create a 1/1 saproling. Did you hear that noise?...

Overgrown Armasaur is a 4/4 body that ALSO creates a sap when dealt damage!

There's that sound again...oh! It's Pestilence! Here to deal damage to our own creatures to create saps that it then kills for value! HOORAY! What's that Pestilence? With Slimefoot, and Konrad out, we're paying a single black mana to deal 3 damage to our opponents? WOOPEE!

Alight, you get the idea. So one last point. Is there an infinite combo? Yes. I happened upon it on accident looking at sac outlets. I'm still fairly new to Magic in the grand scheme, so when I realized that 1 Sap costs of 4 mana for Slimefoot, Parallel Lives would make 2 instead, and then we can sac them both to Ashnod's Altar to net 4 mana and do it again and again, I was quite pleased with myself!

So there you have it! The Darkroot Garden. A (hopefully) super-fun deck based on a (truly) super-fun video game!

By all means, let me know your thoughts and comments on this!
