Power Level: ~5/10

This is my budget upgrade build for the preconstructed deck Built From Scratch that recently got reprinted in Commander Anthology Volume II. This precon comes with a ton of value in it to begin with, chiefly Wurmcoil Engine and plays pretty well right out of the box. If you want to upgrade the deck without spending too much money, then this list is for you.

First things first, we make sure to include the best card in red, Tibalt, the Fiend-Blooded . Basically the second this baby resolves, your opponents will concede. I have yet to see any other card compare to this bad boi.

But seriously, that card is awful. Please cut it from your lists for something better. I can't bring myself to do it once I traded for it, it's a curse.

Clearly, the chief strategy of the deck is to play artifacts and recur artifacts from our graveyard using Daretti, Scrap Savant and similar effects like Trash for Treasure . To do this, we will be rummaging a lot with Daretti, Scrap Savant 's +2 ability, letting us bin our expensive artifacts and draw into lands or cheaper artifacts.

A number of our artifacts want to be sacrificed for recursion, chiefly Mycosynth Wellspring , Ichor Wellspring , Ugin's Nexus , and Solemn Simulacrum . Other cards give us cheap and easy artifacts to trash, like the thopter tokens from Loyal Apprentice and the clues from Tamiyo's Journal . We can use Daretti, Scrap Savant 's -2 ability to sacrifice those artifacts and get bigger better ones for free from our yard like Wurmcoil Engine , Metalwork Colossus , Combustible Gearhulk , and Darksteel Juggernaut .

We also have a number of cards that sacrifice themselves for big effects that we may want to recur for reuse. Nevinyrral's Disk and Mindslaver both make for powerful repeat effects.

Strata Scythe is included because it is bound to be a substantial buff considering we are mono-red and some of our opponents are likely in red as well. Whispersilk Cloak helps get damage through and protect our creatures as well.

This deck generally wins through attrition, playing the long game and grinding down your opponent's resources and accrewing value over the course of the match. The precon is already pretty fun out of the box, and these upgrades just lean more heavily into the artifact synergy portion of that deck. I hope you enjoy this list, and as always feel free to check out my other decklists or to leave comments with suggestions or feedback.

Note: The versions of the cards in this list are specific to my collection. This deck may be found for less than tappedout has it listed.
