Cpt. Sisay, Conveyor of Gods

Esteemed zealots, no longer shall the threats of our adversaries hold any enduring sway in the Theatre of War, for we have the Captain Sisay at the helm!

This deck aims to use Captain Sisay to build a strong board state whilst consistently reacting to and neutralising any threats thus creating time to drop the endgame finishers of this deck Avacyn, Angel of Hope and/or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre.

The goal of this deck is to bring out Captain Sisay fast using one of the nine >2 mana ramp spells: Birds of Paradise, Bloom Tender, Traverse the Ulvenwald, Fertile Ground, Joraga Treespeaker, Llanowar Elves, Mox Amber, Priest of Titania and Voyaging Satyr.

Depending on the environment Captain Sisay will call forth an immediate answer (more on this under header Interactions). Most of the time however when you are playing against casual decks this part of the game will still be used to develop your board state. In that case Captain Sisay will preferably call on Mox Amber, Yisan, the Wanderer Bard or Reki, the History of Kamigawa if you are disguising yourself as very unthreatening. Using Yisan, the Wanderer Bard, depending on the environment, your current board state and the content of your hand you will tutor for either Mother of Runes to protect your board; Joraga Treespeaker for ramp or (my favourite) Weathered Wayfarer. You have now gone full inception by tutoring a tutor that tutored for a land tutor. That is about the most quintessential play to make with this deck. Under header Ramp Strategy and Interactions more on potential targets for Weathered Wayfarer.

Once you have build up some protection for the pieces on your board using one of the six permanents in this deck for that purpose: Cliffside Rescuer, Devoted Caretaker, Equinox, Giver of Runes, Mother of Runes and Shalai, Voice of Plenty. It is time to bring out the midgame deities: God-Eternal Oketra and God-Eternal Rhonas. You are not trying to win the game at this point, merely building your board state and responding to the environment, more on this under header interactions.

Once you have a solid board state with an efficient functioning mana base, protection pieces, some planes walkers and creatures in play its time to bring the pain with Avacyn, Angel of Hope and/or Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre. Dropping an Avacyn, Angel of Hope on a board that's already difficult to interact with is especially satisfying.

Interacting with your adversaries boards is discussed under header interactions below. In order to win you must simultaneously prevent opponents from becoming too strong and develop your own board state as discussed above.

Do you like to tutor answers, especially when an opponent is gleefully lowering his bootheel on the neck of one or more of his adversaries at the table? Below are the scenario's and the corresponding legendary answers accessible using Captain Sisay.

Indestructable or hexproof enemy permanent. Show

You, your creatures and/or planeswalkers being targeted directly. Show

Forced to sacrifice your permanents. Show

Tokens or wide low powered boards. Show

Destruction of your legendary permanents. Show

Need to destroy artefact or enchantment. Show

Need to exile all nonland permanents. Show

Not all threats can be answered using Captain Sisay, perhaps you will have to use Enlightened Tutor or Idyllic Tutor to find Rest in Peace for reanimator decks. Some removal can be tutored up this way aswel: Lignify, Song of the Dryads and Aura Shards.

Furthermore Worldly Tutor can be used to find niche creatures such as Blazing Archon or Sun Titan.

Some answers are found in lands, finding them is easy using Expedition Map, Weathered Wayfarer, Sylvan Scrying and Hour of Promise. Look for Buried Ruin, Cavern of Souls, Hall of Heliod's Generosity, Hall of the Bandit Lord, Homeward Path, Mistveil Plains, Strip Mine and Wasteland.

These classic spot removal spells in the selesnya colorpie are available: Swords to Plowshares, Lignify, Beast Within, Generous Gift and Song of the Dryads.

Lastly a few situational cards that are sure to get you out of a pinch: Rebuff the Wicked, Dawn Charm, Flawless Maneuver, Obscuring Haze and Teferi's Protection.

Without disregarding the serviceability of manadorks there is a second layer of ramp strategy in this deck: Do you like to tap a land for 5 mana, then untap it and tap it again?

Use Expedition Map, Weathered Wayfarer, Sylvan Scrying, Traverse the Ulvenwald and Hour of Promise to get the most valuable lands out of your deck. Your targets are Gaea's Cradle, Lotus Field and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. Buff one or two lands, preferably Lotus Field using Fertile Ground, Overgrowth and Dawn's Reflection. Untap your powerful lands using Deserted Temple, Voyaging Satyr, Krosan Restorer and Garruk Wildspeaker.

This deck is all about finding the right card at the right time. Top deck manipulation helps finding that card without using an activation of Captain Sisay or a tutor. Use Sensei's Divining Top, Scroll Rack, Vivien Reid and Vivien, Monsters' Advocate to that end. The artefacts synergise nicely in conjunction with the planeswalkers +1 or passive ability. Because of this top deck manipulation and the fact that Captain Sisay is putting at least one crucial card per turn into your hand there is no need to reserve a lot of slots for cards dedicated to card draw in this deck.

What is more fun than tapping Captain Sisay once per turn? Tapping her twice of course! Instill Energy, Nature's Chosen and Umbral Mantle can be used for that goal. It might be wise to explain to your opponents at the start of the game that you are not playing a combo deck otherwise they will get appropriately nervous when Umbral Mantle hits the board (some already as soon as they lay eyes on Captain Sisay). Umbral Mantle can be used in this deck to achieve infinite mana but there is no win-con outlet for that mana other than Kamahl's Druidic Vow.

Is there any scenario that I missed and would go unanswered with this current setup of Captain Sisay? Please inform me! Be sure to relate a card that would make for a nice answer to your stated predicament.

Any feedback, card suggestions (including current cards that are to be excluded) or comments are welcome!
